CB550 Cafe Racer ..... It is finally done

Re: CB550 Cafe

Hey Eyhonda,

Thank you, and yours looks great as well. The head light is a V-rod headlight, another more edge head light is the new v-max head light.

Hey Bert Jan, I hope no one has a alternator cover like mine. I just machined it in school a couple months ago, I will be selling them on my web site under CB parts. But I think you are talking about the points cover, in that case I got it from Dime City Cycles. http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-honda-cb350f-cb400f-cb550-cb750-right-side-ignition-points-cover-clear-18-9504k.html

Yes, thanks and sorry ;)

Wait wait... Ok I would love to see some more pics of the brake side mock up. Is that the DCC kit? How did you deal with the offset? Could you show a pic of the fastener you used to attach the Rose Link (both sides, please :D)

Re: CB550 Cafe

Hey sXe,

These are still a mock up, I have looked at your CB550 build and I ran into the same problem you are having. I am going to switch the brake arm to the top side, so that I am pulling on the rod instead of pushing it. I looked up "rose link" and I assume you are referring to the heim link. In that case I just bought them at hardware store.

Re: CB550 Cafe

Hey man,

ya... they just look nasty that small. I was thinking of getting a sleeve for them but I also found this:

http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=29885.0

I like bending the rod to fit. Then we could just thread the thing. I want to keep it a push if I can.

I have seen them called rose linkage too...weird. I saw them at OSH but they only had 1/4" and I had M6 thread on the Tarozzi's

Re: CB550 Cafe

Did a little lathe work today before I had to go to class, I will finish it up tomorrow. I have done some research, and I have not found a fillet lathe cutter. anyone know if they have them?
I am making a speedo eliminator, since I am going with a electronic speedo. I also milled down my 550 rear hub spacer to fit the 750 hub.

If anyone is interested I am making two.

What's the plan for the speedo. Was looking to blank mine off as I will be going the Acewell route. However I saw a speedo drive attachment that looked liked I could maintain the drive and hook it up for a wire.

What is the specific fillet you are going for?
I usually just ground some HSS for a custom groove or radius.

Re: CB550 Cafe

Neevo, I am going to be using the Acewell 2853.

Shocwav, I am just wanting a .25" Fillet

Re: CB550 Cafe

I got the fillet cutter cut out today by using a .5"x3"x.5" steel rod, I then centered up my wobbler on both axis then took a .25" end mill, with it all centered up I plunged .01" at a time. I know you are suppose to taper the bottom but since I was just machining the edge of the aluminum stock I figured I would be okay. So I put my stock into the lathe and tried it out, it came out great. Monday I will get a morris taper bit, cool the steel piece in dry ice then take a torch to the aluminum piece and hopefully it all goes well.

I also got my rear set holders CNC, tomorrow I will drill out the rear set through hole. I had to make a 10 degree block so that I could machine the difference from angle they are mounted to being straight with the world. In short I machined them so that the rear sets would sit straight.

Ah, me too. Would prefer the analogue tach needle but it's a few dollars more. Are you mounting a discreet pickup or the larger one?

Where and how are you planning to attach it?

Re: CB550 Cafe

Probably on the inside of the shock, what about you?

here are the updates for today, much more tomorrow.

your 550 is coming along really nice!!
good looking build. she's going to be a head turner out on the road for sure!

Probably the same, although I don't want to mount that huge rectangular pickup on the bike. I saw Acewell do a pickup that went on the speedo drive and thought that looked like a good option as I could maintain the original speedo drive but turn it into a digital signal.

Failing that I will get rid of the speedo drive with a spacer and mount a small pickup on the inside of the fork leg. My KTM enduro bike has a magnetic speedo drive with the magnet in the disc and the pickup on the caliper. That would be a discreet option too.

I know I am not impressed by the craftsmanship of Benjies stuff at all, I think the customer I am building the bike for got a reject part, or they might all be built to that quality. Here is just an idea I had, but he didn't go for it. Here are some more updates. Velocity stacks, rear fender/chain guard, rear brake stay from a xs650 cut and re-welded and the front brake assembly.

What air filters are those? I want to put some on my cb550

Re: CB550 Cafe

The velocity stacks are from DCC they are billet aluminum which is amazing for the price they are well worth it.

I also got the frame back from the powder coaters and I also got my front disc back from a friend.

I finished up the rear set holders, got the gas tank filler cap bonded in, and got the an idea for the seat.

Re: CB550 Cafe

Man this is coming along nicely, cannot wait to see the final pics when it's all done. I might be a real lurker and seldom post but IMHO this is heading straight towards the BOTM section :)

Love the seat idea, it's gonna look slick. And that motor... pure awesome!

Re: CB550 Cafe

inspirational build. what are you're headlight ears? they look fairly thick; but don't seem to be attached by any visible means.

MOAR PICS!
