CB650 (82)

1982 CB650C
Well I joined about a year ago, and I'm finally making some progress on my cafe so i figured I'd contribute some pics. Shes gotta be done by June 13 for a trip to port dover. Mostly all cosmetic stuff left, except for a little wiring. The fiberglass seat is coming along, after a lot of sanding and bondo. Im still not 100% happy with the shape of the seat, but I've got it this far I may as well finish it since I'm doing the paint anyway. I think when i get some padding on it it'll look a bit better. Shes gonna be black.

The K&Ns are really sexy. Almost worth the price of them :-[ (Sorry about the dusty pics) The tank is from a kawi, it may look a little skinny from the side but its pretty wide and i like the way it sits really close to the engine. It sure made putting a petcock on it a bitch...but ill have more details on that later.

I grinded and filled in the tank badge brackets and did a little grinding and bondo on the front seam as well. Actually I wouldnt recommend doing that because when i was grinding the seam I went to far and could see the 2 edges of the tank so I had to run a weld along the seam to make sure it was sealed. It should look good though.

Thats it until paint which I will am hoping to have done next weekend providing it doesn't rain

you might bondo the trim of the tank around the bottom, where there is a crease. it might be weird cause your tank is boxy but it may look better??? you could try and square it off but the bondo is probably to brittle and would crack if you hit it. Just some ideas...

I like that tank too. do you know what year/bike its off of?

I though about doing something to the crease along the bottom, but I'm worried that being along the edge of the tank, it could chip the bondo easily. The tank is off a Kawasaki Z1-R-1977.

I think the tank looks excellent the way it is.
The seat is a bit high up for it imho, but the bike is cool-lookin.

I agree. the seat turned out higher than i anticipated... but it'll do for now. On the plus side the stock battery fits perfectly under the seat with noooo room to spare. I guess i got lucky there. (smaller battery is twice the price of mine)

Will, did you build the seat yourself? If so, any pics of the process?

Unfortunately no, i have no pics. It wasn't a pretty process, being my first time working with fiberglass.

I'm just getting ready to put my cb650 on the road. Your approach is completely different than mine. I love it. Those air filters you are using; what model k&n filters are they? My pods had all sorts of installation problems. Have you had a chance to run the engine with them on yet? If so, did you have to rejet?

Thanks for the comment, I've had it running and it seems to rev great so hopefully the power is good too. It had pods on it before though, so i'm assuming the previous owner rejeted it. The pods that were on it were the black foam 'unifilter' type. I searched through every pod filter K&N makes but because carbs 1&2 and 3&4 sit so close together nothing else would fit except these which are made especially for the 650. As you can see from the pics, one filter covers 2 carbs. They were still a bitch to get on, but i did get em on. According to sohc4.com you have to cut the rubber to get them on, NOT TRUE.

anyway, here is the link to the K&N site: http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RC-2362
They were like $100-120 ordered from mufflerman. part numer (RC-2362)

Thanks for the air filter tip Will. I'm going to ride my bike for a while and if it proves to be a reliable steed, I will probably invest in a pair of those filters. Keep the photos coming as cb650's aren't common cafe material. I'll be watching your progress with great interest.
