cb750 oil reservoir

Ok, so I was stripping more parts off the bike tonight and got to thinking about the oil reservoir, and how much I dislike it. Is it really necessary? Does the bottom end not hold enough oil to circulate sufficiently? I've seen 750's with the tank removed, but never been able to ask anyone about the reason. Any ideas?

Guys,

The Honda CB750 is a dry sump engine, i.e. a seperate oil tank. The small bottom end of the bike doesn't carry sufficient oil to provide adequate cooling and prolonged engine life. Without the seperate tank you would probably cook your oil and have to change it every couple of miles.

I've been thinking of designing and building a different style oil tank than the stock side mounted unit. There are some after market ones out there like Benjie's Cafe Racers, and generic ones in some of the Harley catalogs (they're dry sump too). British cafe racers had some interesting designs too.

I'll find some other designs and post them. Maybe we can generate a few ideas from the members!

REALLY tight budget here too... I say in the july issue of the horse backstreet choppers taht a guy using a harley frame and a sohc cb750 engine used a heineken beer "oil can" size for an oil reservoir. I wonder what the correct capacity is for the oem tank? if we could find one that matches the spec but mounts under the seat or even in the solo seat hump that would be killer. Prob my faveorite ive seen so far is a oil tank molded into a custom gas tank, then mount the battery in the seat hump, but again....tight budget

i did make it myself, its just a 4.5" od aluminum tube 10" long with all the appropriate fittings and internal plumbing welded on,
the bike has no wiring yet, the wires that you see in the pics are just from the tail light and turn signals

what Im looking for is the oil lines, fittings, and dimensions of internal components. Im thinking this was an inexpensive project?

cut up your stock tank and use the fittings from that. just remember to pointe the return line away from the feed. you only need one vent line.

Try to mount your battery, and oil tank as low as possible for a better handelling bike, unless you're building a chopper . Those things don't handle anyways!

i used different fittings and lines, but kept the ends that go to the engine and built the new hoses using them... it wasn't pricey at all and looks better than the stock side tank

huh? you would be surprised. it's more in the rider than the bike.

Hey there guys, just thought I'd throw this out there... We saw a need for this and have been fabbing a complete kit that can be installed into any CB750. The version show here (sorry for the phone shots) also has bent supports due to us changing the suspension geometry on this particular 750.

We plan on offering a complete kit that will bolt up to all the OE fittings with optional new stainless braided lines and an externally mounted front oil cooler... It's a polygon vs, a triangle allowing it flow with the lines of the fram on all 5 sides.
