CB750 steering stem locking nut ?

I'm currently rebuilding a 78' CB750. I just put the motor in and installed new steering bearings(allballs) and I'm really not sure I got it right. I'm wondering if there is a locking nut that is supposed to go on top of the spanner nut to prevent it from unscrewing itself(on the same threads as the spanner nut, not the ones above it) of does the top triple tree just sits over it and locks it in place.

I'm asking this because if there is in fact a nut that goes there: 1, I lost that nut and 2, having added a washer to the bottom bearing, the stem is lower than it's supposed to be and I don't have enough threads left on top of the spanner nut to jam another one above it.

I have been looking in the manual, and there doesn't seem to have that locking nut. I'm wondering if Honda added this locking nut on bikes younger than 1979, because looking on ebay for supposedly complete triple trees, the ones before 1980 seems to have the locking nut. Here are two examples:

1978:

1981:

Btw, here's how the bike looks as of now:

Thanks !

Take pictures of what the outer races look like on the bike and the inner races installed as well.

You can take a look on http://www.cmsnl.com/ to see how your bike is supposed to go together.

Wow, very interesting ! Looking at both schematics from the 78' CB750 and the 80' CB750 it seems to confirm what I thought: no lock nut for the 78'. I'm only able to go work on the bike on the weekend so I'll post a picture of the steering assembly next week. Anyway, the website will help a lot for the rest, thanks firebane !

If anyone with a 78' or earlier CB750 would like to confirm, please do so !
