CB750F First Project

nice job on the polishing! glad to see another 750F being brought to life. I plan on doing the same to mine, but I'm going to wait until my next oil change. I plan on replacing all the gaskets, and getting the allen bolt engine dress-up kit. That's when I'll get that left side lookin all blingy!

I have been watching you thread. I wish I was making progress on my bike like you are, but it will get there eventually. Lots of big idea, not a lot of time in the garage.

When you do get to replacing the gaskets and engine bolts make sure you have a good impact driver. The stock bolts turn to mush right away ;D

yeah finding time for motorcycle repair seems to be my problem as well. as fun as it is, it's a little hard to get motivated when you look at the bigger picture and realize how much work there's left to do. one thing at a time, and it'll all come together.

definitely take your time and do it right the first time, unlike me, who did everything rushed just to get it on the road for riding season! i'm kinda digging the 'mad max' style anyway, but come this winter, this thing is getting a ground up rebuild, complete with 850 big bore kit, and engine parts and swingarm to chrome... ohhhh yeaaaaaaah ;D

oh, and the impact driver saved my life (and bike) with the oil filter bolt. a few whacks and it was free. i'm sure i'll have to do the same with the engine bolts. can't wait to get those allen bolts and new gaskets on there. keep at it!! nice job!!

If you buy the allen bolt dress up kit remember to put that allen key in your tool kit - I learned that lesson the hard way, a long way from home.

I have been doing some work on my rear wheel as of late. I put on a new rear sprocket, and got the drive side cleaned up. Next up is the brake side.

It was a slow day in the office today, so rather then trying to work hard on nothing, I went down to the garage. I have been thinking about colors for the bike as of late, but before new colors go on the old ones have to come off. So I took the gas tank out back and gave it a liberal helping of paint stripper.

Most of the paint came right off, but there are a few stubborn spots that would not budge even after a second dose of stripper. Can I use a brass wire wheelon the tank, or should I just suck it up and sand the paint off?

Stripper doing what a stripper does

use a jell stripper in the pics that dont show i can only assume it was the spray crap... does not work... if not, just put more stripper on... do not brass wheel the tank

Here are the before and after pics of the front wheel.

Also, my wife saw this seat sitting on the street, and thinking that I would not take it home, she pointed it out to me. Anybody know what kind of seat it is?

This weeks priority has been the carburetors.

When I broke apart the carbs I was surprised to see how clean the bowls were. This one is indicative of how the other 3 looked.

<img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_vZZxEy5HMKM/SgPHzeGif6I/AAAAAAAACH8/GabxRmDosgw/s800/IMG_6336.JPG" />

While the bowls were clean, almost all of the jets were clogged. So everything went into boiling lemon juice for about 15 minutes.

<img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_vZZxEy5HMKM/SgPGGQyc4ZI/AAAAAAAACHs/6yDwLm1Jo-M/s800/IMG_6339.JPG" />

I found a nice trick by accident. I put the jets into a glass ramekin and sank the ramekin to the bottom of the pot. When the lemon juice got a to a rolling boil the ramekin started to rattle on the bottom of the pot. This rattled the jets around and help shake loose the clogs. Not exactly sonic cleaning, but not bad.

This is how the carbs looked before cleaning.

The lemon juice turned the bodies of the carbs a chalky gray, but I don't mind the way it looks. I also cleaned up the float bowls. I sanded them with 400, 800, 1500, and 2000. Not sure if I am going to put them on the buffing wheels or not.

wow man what an awesome job you're doing at putting crazy amounts of detail and attention in your work. heck, i just took carb cleaner and a toothbrush to mine!

when i do my teardown this weekend, i'll make sure to refer to this thread for how to do things the right way.

keep it up!

The glass ramekin idea sounds pretty good. I'm definitely going to clean out my carbs in lemon juice.

Good work, my friend, good work.

Looks so nice I might junk my pumpers off my 78 and strap on the 76's...
I really like their look, good job man!!!

Have not had a lot of time to get in the garage as of late, but I have been playing with colors for the bike.

Here is the front runner at the moment.

Still thinking about a way of bringing in some of the cream color in on the tail section of the bike. I am little surprised that I am as big a fan of light blue as I am. There is a long way to go before painting, so I will have time to figure it out.

Not bad. Something to think about.
