CG125 OHV Build Oddessy

Re: CG125 house special - Exhaust bent up.

And by complete randomness met another previous owner of this bike today.
He recognised the repair to the wiring (the little that is left!)
Same story ........... great engine, electrics crap and everything bolted on kept on falling off.
:) :)

Re: CG125 house special - Exhaust bent up.

I'm going to revisit the plates when I've got it all mechanically sound, they'll look like swiss cheese by the time I'm done!
There's lots of stainless stuff like thermos flasks that would give a reverse cone but haven't got easy access to having stainless welded to mild. Am checking out a small C02 canister tomorrow.
I've been offered an old Garelli Cross tank, It would need some alteration to the back of then pan to fit but would look interesting and suitably eccentric.
Still would like to go with the original idea of a fuel cell and cover but the cover isn't forth coming.
Bin getting into vintage Italian stuff that has upholstered seats with a gap inbetween the tank.
What do you think of the header? Would give lots of torque.

Re: CG125 house special - Exhaust bent up.

I like this ....... it's so 'ked up.

Re: CG125 house special - Running :)

So today was the big day to see if my ignition only wiring diagram was right. Eek
I did an oil change and adjusted the valves and set the air screw at 1 1/2 turns.
I had 2 petrolhead mates on hand who kinda took over from there ........
Filled up carb bowl and kicked away.
Nothing doing, nada, nought, 'k all.

Regapped plug for a better spark. Nope still refusing.

They took the plug back out and dripped some petrol down into the cylinder...

First kick, massive bang, lots of black smoke and crap out of the exhaust and spluttered into life!
I put the exhaust and air filter back on, and sure enough it fired straight back up.
Jeez an open megaphone is seriously loud ;)

They set the airscrew for a nice even tick over and it ran for over five minutes on a bowl of juice.

So now to find a reverse cone for the meg, and carry on with the endless snagging.

But all in all, well chuffed.

:) :D ;D

Re: CG125 house special - Running :)

its running? good... time for a totally illegal top speed run while its still light and free of all the non-ignition only parts... ;)

It's running as sweet as a sweet thing ..... It won't be getting much heavier after seat and tankage as I'm getting a 'daylight only MOT' for it. ;)

It's soooo freaking loud with the megaphone open and the Police HQ is only 500 yards away from the workshop.
Mind you, that would be totally 'cafe' to hoon past the gate house at 50mph and 150db!

Re: CG125 house special - Running :)

The log book (title) says it's red.

I don't like bright red so it'll be some kind of washed out red.
Some kind of uber thick shaped fork brace, what ever the thuckest ally plate I can get rolled to a 110mm dia.
If this isn't poss I'll get a slice of 110mm dia ally tube and get legs welded on to it.

The seat will be based on the plastic school seat I scavanged.

The tank ...... I've got to commit to something pretty soon!

I may have acquired an old Suzuki X5 tacho if my mate can find it.

I'd like to fit a stem from the head stock to mount it way out front.

It'll be function over form to start with. But eccentric is in vogue. ;)

Re: CG125 house special - mock up pics/u turn

Not only have I discovered the first local hill climb is on April 9th, but fuel here in the UK is set to become more expensive than unicorn sperm, so the pressure is on to get this puppy race worthy and road worthy.

No tank solution has been forth coming so far, so I dug the old heinous one off the scrap pile and got a gorilla to get the seized gas lid off. although the petcock is shagged I discovered the tank internals were actually rust free.
So for now I'll have to use this one.

I've started to shape the seat up, I'm going to use agricultural flooring rubber for padding.

My total project spend including purchase is just under $100. Which is about $100 over budget.

I've made up a baffle for the megaphone which I'll get welded on during the week.
The area of the holes add up to the ID area of the exit tube.

Re: CG125 house special - mock up pics/u turn

Wednesday to do list:

bend up rear seat bracket
beg for high density foam
shorten and drill rear brake rod
drill rear brake lever to suit
get baffle welded into meg

Wednesday spend money list:
fork gaiters
kill button
gear lever stub
petrol tap

And that's not the half of outstanding jobs.
Poxy snagging goes on and on
and on.
Why does the 'little' stuff take so long?

Re: CG125 house special - mock up pics/u turn

Well, the rear end is starting to shape, and I got a new petrol tap today.

P1030327.jpg

The meg is getting the baffles welded in. I'm going to shorten the end of the header back to the black line so it pokes out from under the rearset plates.

Re: CG125 house special - new bits

A little progress ........
The seat pan is all bracketed up, rear set brake side all sorted.
I've solved the wiring riddle for the regulator/rectifier.
I've drilled out the lugs on the forks ready to be filled with weld and re-tapped.
Not had the megaphone done yet though.

I've spent a little money, netting me gaiters, rear light, petrol tap, wireless speedo and a gear lever.
The gear lever is on the bike so in the photo it is represented by an onion.

Itching to get this on the road.

Re: CG125 house special - light of day

Some photo updates ..............
The dark stuff on the ground gents, is real Welsh shadow, a bit of a 'cut out and keep' for you guys.
The only known thing rarer is rocking horse shit.
So marvel and weep. ;)

Hmmm. there will be a brief intermission while I get the links to work.

Still very much a work in progress and being tweeked. Same theme, get it sorted first, tart it up afterwards.
I boiled the chain in tractor oil and refitted it so I could undo and change the gearbox sprocket.
I think I may get some kind of small box in between the seat and tank to hold the CDI and other junk.
I'm having problems getting the front wheel equally spaced in the new trees, so am taking it to a mates tomorrow to try to find WTF is going on.
I can't wait to get the silencer back so I can fire it up again.

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Need 30mm of clearance between the tank and the bars to keep the Man sweet.
It's hammer time.

I am LOVIN' your build! It really has a stout stance!!

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Thanks Kev.
I trying to persuade a friend to race it in a hill climb (road) weekend after next, so the heat is on to pull it together.

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Hadn't popped into this build for a while. It's looking great, so far, even if you have to use that tank for a bit. And you're a braver man than me on the hammer work. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Yeah it took a bit of courage to lay into the tank, but right now needs must, gotta meet race regs.
One day it'll have a 24" long 7" wide tank!

Re: CG125 house special - beat the crap out of the tank.

Just read the whole thing. Cool build so far. Is that seat stable?
