cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion. Are We There Yet?

Ride Bmx, Race motorbikes.
heyy guys, recently picked up a cg125 which was in sort of half cafe'd, needs some work doing to tidy it up and where some previous owners obviously cut off the rear cover on the exhaust that hold the baffles in place inside, whether this has caused the backpressure in the engine to drop, it wont tick over when if i take it off full choke, it just dies straight away. so if this is becuase the jets arent supplying it with enough fuel to air mixture im not sure.

anyway i was wondering if you guys thought that a re jet was in need, ive tried raisng the needle in the carb whether that willl work i dont know becuase ive not worked on bikes before this is my first. and if so what jet size to move up to considering that ive taken the airbox off and will be replacing it with a cone filter.

il be uploading pictures soon, many thanks.

tom. ;D

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

Worry about getting it in tune first before you start going in there all excited and modifying everything. Like I always tell people with a new bike or just starting out, get the bike in proper tune first. That means in a nutshell; get a shop manual, clean the petcock, use a fuel filter, clean the carb, check the float level, check the air screw, check the idle screw, check the spark, check the plug gap, check the points gap and ignition timing, check the valve clearances and check the battery charging system. Did I miss something?

Upsizing the jet is required anytime you modify the exhaust or the intake. You've done both. It will need a bigger main jet, maybe a bigger pilot jet too. No one can tell you what size. You have to tune that yourself by reading the plug (plug chops). Buy a jet kit or just buy the next 3 bigger jets.

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

If all that has been messed with is the exhaust, it should still run well on standard jetting, just be noisier.
don't change jet size. My CG is running standard jets on a mildly gas flowed head, k&n filter and a more efficient exhaust with loads of back pressure and a race cdi. I would clean/overhaul your carb, sounds like a blockage or misadjustment. Do you want a Manual, as I have it as a file and can email it. Set everything stock. Do you have the 'pumper' also called accelerator carb on it? If your throttle cable splits into 2 cables you have. one operating the slide and the other the pump.
Most cg's didn't have this carb but for a year or two brazilian cg's did.

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

yeah, well im currently waiting for my engine case left and right side to come back from my mates, luckily enough for me he works at a pannel beating and spraying comapny so thats where im gewtting all my paintwork done at the moment seeing as i coulnt get it right :) anyway ive ditched the airbox and when it gets back together sounds like everythings got to be all set to factory, i.e timing, plug and valve clearance etc. ive already sorted the valve clearances i could tell that but the sound of it running :D

ive got a few years to do it all ;D im only 15 now so ive got a lot to learn, but one thing im heading towards thinking is it is the floats being how sensitive they are) being as the last owner i purchased it off said he was knocked off the bike on his way home from work, he got a few miles down the road and it cut out. whats your guess's?

being as the exhausts standard and only had the end plate ground off i wasnt sure it the backpressure had affected it, maybe why the bike cuts out after the chokes been taken off, dont have a clue.

eyhonda; i too have the one with the throttle cable that splits in two to the throttle slide and to the pump cable. you've got it too?

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

You've got the one with the pumper carb! Sweet!
The engine cutting out could be anything ....... shit in the carb, or the petrol tap, strip the tap and give it a good clean, it's amazing what you'll find in there.
These engines are beyond simple and reliable.
Do you want a manual?

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

yeah i might as well do that while im waiting on parts coming back now then! need a gasket seat and air filter and i should be good to go :) but should i empty the tank before checking the tap? guessing its gonna just flood everywhere

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

wouldnt mind having that manual if youve got a spare 5 minutes to send it to me ;D
cheers buddy

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

this is what im hoping to acheive some thing like, apart from the bottom end its going to have silver cases and its gonna have matt black fins and block.

just a quick photoshop so youve got some idea whats its like at the moment ill also put some of the bike in its current state as well to give you some idea of how its coming along guys :)

hoping to slim the bike down so it looks less bulky and hopefully will ride better as a result too ;D got the cases back today and i'll throw some pictures up of them just gotta get my gasket set and the frame sprayed and it should all start coming along (finally) then theres the seat to tackle. Not sure whether to go fibreglass or an all foam slimline seat with a mini bum stop in the back, seeing as ive got to re-fab a new pan as ive thrown the horrible bulky son of a bitch out ;D

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

heres one we finished recently.. my mate made up some side covers using ply he then varnished (which matches the seat base that he left exposed)
CG's are great little bikes, and the pushrod engine goes forever.

keep up the hard work, ill be following your progress!

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

we did a full first service on one of those in 12 mins, including removing rocker mountings to torque head (Honda time was 1.5 hrs  )
Admittedly, there were 3 of us working on it so really it was 36min 'man hour'
We wanted to go home at regular time so got it all done and paid for between 5:45 and 6:00pm ;D
They are pretty unbreakable' as long as they have oil in them (but, they only make about 9bhp at wheel)
Friend rode one from Brigend (South Wales) to somewhere in Turkey, (and back 8) )
About 8,000 mile round trip.

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

That seat looks great as it is and the simple ally side panels rock. I've got some rear sets with plates up for grabs if you are interested PM me.

Re: cg125br-j cafe build/ conversion

Heres the new speedo i had to swap round the internals ::) Now all thats left to do is install the lights inside the speedo because of its got to have sleeves on the lights so they all dont light up, this means ive got to make up some thinner smaller sleeves for the lights and glue them into place on the back of the face, a lot of work just to change a speedo i must admit!
