Chinese BMW copy

Have you seen this Chinese bike? I'd never heard of the Chang Jiang before. That rear suspension is pretty cool. I'm not sure what is happening with that head angle though...

If you decide to buy one of these pieces of shit, make sure your AAA membership is current. You'll need it.

While it sort of looks vintage, it will never be vintage, because they will be scrapped for lack of repair parts in a few years.

Hell, most of the clones were made in the 1960s. And it is actually a Ural knock off, which was a pre-WW2 BMW military platform clone itself.

The engine (aircooled flathead) is actually quite good. The rest of the machine is a piece of junk. Bad brakes, horrible frame welds/brazings/castings, soft gears, brittle drive shaft...

I think it looks cool and totally impractical. They're selling as fast as Bandit9 can build them.

LonelyWolf - that's the spoils of war for you. Got us a lot of rocket scientists.

Don't get me wrong. I'd prefer the real deal but this could be a cheap substitute for someone. I wouldn't buy one just because of principle but I like the style. I also just checked the website. I love the fact they thing of themselves as pirates. That is the biggest truth in advertising I've seen in a long time. I do like the style they're going for but for the money they're wanting I can buy something far superior.

Maybe you're not familiar - this is a custom build of a Chang Jiang, which was a Chinese copy of the Ural, which was in turn a Soviet BMW clone.

I'm not familier. That's good to know that they're a copy of a copy.

Yeah, exactly. I just thought it was interesting to see what a builder in China has come up with using the material he's got access to. I think it's pretty cool. Places like India and China have some "interesting" bikes.

I really like it. I expect that it works pretty well for the urban environment - and it's an art piece more than a commuter.

I think that a lot of the time people get upset that not every bike is built to tear up canyon roads. The CJ was a miserable bike to start with - ill take this over the scrap heap.

If it is a Copy of a BMW would BMW internals fit in there and work?

Nope. It's a worse copy of a bad copy of a good bike. The motors are actually pretty solid though, as Scruffy mentioned. The CJ motor was a better setup than the Ural - it's not uncommon to find hammer impressions on the Ural pistons, as the Soviets were not known for their quality control.

Not likely.
If I wanted to build something like that, I would use a Ural as the platform. You can get replacement parts, and they are usually made pretty well. They also use some quality components such as Brembo brakes and Mikuni carburetors. I know several people who have Urals, and they speak highly of them.
