Chrome removal

Been Around the Block
Ok so I called my local powder coater today for my wheels. They recommended just buying new rings in bare steel rather than try to get the chrome off my old ones.

So does anyone have any experience removing chrome? I kinda want to avoid some expensive and toxic chemical bath if possible.

Or if possible suggest someplace to buy new bare steel rims dirt cheap.

Right now I am looking at a shop that said they would give it a shot at $65 an hour for the removal.

Help me with ideas

Normal sandblasting prep for powdercoat is all that is needed. Some powdercoaters have had a bad experience whit powdercoating over chrome, and refuse to do it again. But seriously, proper sandblasting before coating is all that is needed. The chrome doesn't have to be "removed." Powdercoat just needs some "tooth" to the surface to adhere well, just like paint.

Maybe you need to find another powdercoater.

Well he said I could blast it but it would take hours unless I got garnet or something. He said that even if its just enought to give it tooth that later the chrome can start to come up and if gives it a weird finish

New chrome rims aren't terribly dear are they?

You are missing the point. He wants rims without chrome, because his powdercoater doesn't know shit.

He's full of shit.
It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes per rim with aluminum oxide. Any powdercoater could do that, but some make up lame excuses for past jobs when they have done poor prep work or powdercoated over failing chrome. Bead blast is no good. It does not leave a rough enough surface. Aluminum oxide is standard to prep for powdercoating.

So basically I should just give it hell with the sandblaster and then take it to the powdercoater and tell him to shut up and do it

I'm thinking more along the lines of find a different powdercoater.

Pretty much any powdercoater will include the sandblasting with the price of the job, and they usually insist on doing the sandblasting themselves so that they have control over the prep. The guy that you are talking to could do a shitty job, and then blame you for poor results. I would not use him, ever.

Last time I had some rims done, the customer was going to take them to a plater and have the chrome electrolytically removed. I told him not to bother. I took them to another powdercoat shop that I use because they were too large for my oven. There was some rust pitting in one place. He sandblasted, then sanded the pitted area, and coated the rims three coats for $45.

Man, go to Salk Lake Chrome or Ogden chrome and have them remove it if you really want it removed. I use both of those shops for chrome removal (only Ogden chrome for plating though). I agree with Alpha though, you don't have to remove the chrome, all you need to do is blast off any rust, flaking, and evenly blast the rest of the chrome. I've done a handful of rims this way and not had problems with them in severe conditions like MX.

Try Powder Extreme Coatings, Powder Keg, or AAA Metal Finishings.

Ogden chrome was the one that quoted me $65 an hour to remove the chrome. I'm just goung to blast them and have them coated if worse comes to worse I get different ones and try again. Shouldn't be hard to get cb750 wheels lol

Sound like a good plan to me, if they're flaking, I'd take a rough sandpaper or wire brush to the flaking areas before blasting. I've done this a lot, as long as you get a tooth on all the chrome and get off any flaking and rust, you will not have a problem. The guys at Powder Extreme Coatings are good guys and usually give me a great deal on small items like that.

Talked to powder extreme and they quoted me $45 per wheel and didn't bat an eye at the chrome so I think thats where I will be headed. Thanks again for the recommend John
