Cj360 weak coils?

renslow

Been Around the Block
Here I am again!

I have a 360 motor in need of advice. I have 145psi on both cylinders, carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt with new gaskets, ignition timing is spot on. I'm having trouble getting the thing to actually kick over and run.

I did a coil check with the diagram posted(big thank you for whoever made this diagram!) and i get a really really weak arc on both spark plugs. Now the bike does have 26k but the points are in great condition and i've checked the timing so many times i feel like i can do it with my eyes closed. Does it sound like i maybe missed something? With that being said is it time for new coils? This is my first build and this summer weather is getting me anxious. I wish i could figure this out id really appreciate any input on this. This forum has been an amazing source of knowledge.

Any ideas?

I've got the bike to start a couple weeks ago but only on one cylinder. Which made me believe it could have been crap compression but i did a compression check this morning and like i posted above its 140-145psi on both cylinders.

First up, 145 PSI isn't great compression. You really want to see over 155 PSI. That's on a warm motor, though, so I'm assuming your numbers will get better after you get it running (you'll want to recheck that, when you do).

I think the problem is with your battery, though. A common symptom of 350s and 360s is that they will die on one cylinder once the battery starts giving up the ghost. A short while later and they won't run at all. You can test this by hooking up some jumper cables from your car.

Good to know! Well im just glad that they're somewhat even given the amount of miles on the block. Still should be able to some more miles on it though right?

Yeah i'm starting to become more aware of the crapping charging systems on these bikes. While i was doing the test i posted with the link on my first post the battery was fully charged. I let it sit over night on trickle and i tested the volts before and it was sitting at 11.5v when i tested the coils.

Gah what does this mean? I wish i knew more about electronics. I appreciate the response.

This was caused by the timing being off. The timing was off by such a small amount, less that a millimeter or so. It blows my mind how precise these motors have to be inorder for them to be happy:) It'll start off a couple kicks but im working on syncing the carbs now. Thank you dotheton for your help! Always much appreciated.
