I was wrapping up Kiley's exhaust (http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=10530.495) and decided to make some CL-style pipes. Right now, they are just tacked up, but I'm curious what you folks think. Tomorrow morning, I'll purge weld them.
The pipes are 304 stainless steel, 16ga. Thanks for looking!
I heard somewhere that some of the funkyness of the stock CL pipes was done in an effort to keep them the same length. Also, is that tight turn on the LH header going to screw up the flow? I admittedly know almost nothing about tuning exhaust. BUT I LOVE ME SOME HIGH PIPES!
Looks good. I run CL pipes, too, and really like the look. Did you consider making two like the left pipe and running one out each side? Maybe I'm nuts.... might look good that way. :
Thanks Doc. I'm not going to use these pipes, so the silencing will be up to whomever buys these. Personally, I really want to do an internal silencer in the tubes themselves. Unsilenced CL pipes are loud. I can hear Kit coming from a mile away.

I hope not The stock CL pipes on my Honda actually use a tighter bend closer to the head. That bend is 2.5" centerline radius. The next set will use the 2" CLR. Anyway, see below.

I can do that easily if someone wants it. I agree it would look cool. I also want to build a set that runs up higher, like the paint or powdercoat build. I really like his exhaust.
yeah, like the pipes... but there's just something a little offputting about the difference in the radius between the left and right... not sure if it's something that can be changed without reassessing the entire idea though... dunno, bends aren't too pricey, experiment!
Hell, I love the pipes. I ran CL pipes on my last 360, but that "horseshoe" crap on the left pipe alway drove me nuts...looked ugly to me....yours look clean and even...like someone didn't design them with parts from the plumbing department (see 450 pipes above)..I just never liked that.
Good job man....and yes on the internal silencing. That is where it's at. You could even do a collector of some sort and run it into one muffler fairly easily kind of like the BCR version.
Chris, first of all, nice work on that exhaust. But instead of the tight radius of the left pipe coming around the left side of the bike, maybe criss cross the pipes somehow? I mean the right header leading to the left side (how it is now) and have the left header going to the right side? Just to eliminate the pretzel bend in the pipe
Thanks for all the ideas gents. These pipes are going to be fully-welded as-is. I know what you're saying about them needing "something." The thing is, that "something" means they will become more ornate. I build my stuff to be as light, and simple as possible--anything else is superfluous, and that's not me.
The next set I build will be like these:
I love the simplicity and honesty in its design. So look for those soon. I'm also going to start experimenting with some silencing. Anyway, look for the final weld pics this afternoon. Keep it coming, gents.
I find them a bit uneventful. Although they're bare bones and that's what you're going for, maybe an elegant motofiaccone laser etched heat shield would spice them up, still be lightweight, and serve a purpose. Just a thought.
LOve em Chris. I think they are cool. Maybe offer some sort of small heat shield like SquadraCorse said. That would send them over the top. Maybe for the bobs and chops a turndown at the ends and cut open to a nice sharp point. Just some thoughts.
Im gonna do two "shortie" mufflers on mine. Im concerned about space between the pipes though so I thnk ill be doing some pipe bending... The mufflers are 2 3/8 wide at the body, so im hoping i dont have to do a whole lot of twisting to get them to sit side by side. anyone done this?
They look like JC Whitney's shorty megaphone mufflers:

Also what I used on my Suzuki (not cafe'd - just rebuilt. Sorry!)
