CL350 cam upside down

Been Around the Block
I finally got my CL350 back together, tried to fire it up, with little success. Getting a bit of firing through the carbs, but not backfire like, and then suddenly realized that my cam is in upside down.

The manual says to have the rotor at the LT timing mark, while the L mark on the cam gear is at the top, but I couldn't find where it said how the cam was supposed to be bolted to the gear. Finally, after 5 days, I think my head finally re-worded the shop manual in a way that I could understand it, and I've realized that the pin for the points cam is supposed to point up also. The mark on the points cam, which I didn't have on at the time also should point up.

So. It is at all possible to get the cam case cover off while the engine is in the frame? I was really hoping to ride it this weekend, but I don't think I'll be able to pull the engine, fix the cam and put everything back together in time to head out for the weekend. Bummed...

I'm thinking that if I loosen the motor mounts I might be able to tilt the engine enough to get the cam box cover off. Then I should be able to reach the screws holding the cam gear to the cam. I was so grumpy last night that I didn't want to touch it.

You cant get the top end off with the motor in the frame unfortunatly. Also, I think that the manual is worded incorrectly... That happens sometimes.

You did try turning crank 360 degrees?
the cam turns half speed of crank, so can't be 180 degree's out, only 10 degree increments are possible, (with a 36 t cam sprocket)
when you get to 180, it's timed for the opposite cylinder (or valves are on overlap, they will be every other crank rotation)

Just wanted to update. I figured out that my problem was that the points cam was upside down. I didn't think this was possible, since there's a locator pin on the cam, but then I figured out that if you twist it so it's fully advanced, you can pull the lobe part from the plate and stick it back on 180° rotated. then my spark sparked at the correct spot. I've just been riding for the last few weeks, so no updates.
