my parts diagram tells me, is a magnetic starter switch. my wiring diagram tells me it hooks up to the starter motor. if i'm doing kick-start only do i need it?
nope if your doing kick only you dont need it, just be careful on some bikes the powerfeed for the other bikes electrics are on one of the terminals with one of the big wires, that small wire still needs 12v

sorry i'm an electrical idiot... are you saying that the small wires still need to be attached to the battery? can they run directly to the battery or would that kill the battery?
Go dig up a CJ wiring diagram, they don't have E-starts and it should have what you need to get things back running. I can point you towards a pdf shop manual if you like.
How good of shape is that relay in? I may lift it from you if you let it go.
Edit, I think all you would have to do is take that long wire with the white plastic connector off the relay and connect it to the battery + terminal and you would be good to go.
