Clip-ons too big

I bought a pile of parts for my yamaha rd that included a set of clip-ons. Now with the bolts tightened up there is still a 1-2mm space between the forks and clip-ons. Is there a way to safely fit bigger clip-ons to smaller forks? I attached a picture if it helps in any way.

maybe take the bolts out and cut some material off so when you put em back it in pinches it tighter? that's just me brainstorming alound, someone will give you a definitive answer to whether or not that's a good idea..

I would not try and modify those to work. If you try and squeeze that 1-2mm down and close the gap, it will probably brake the clip-on tube. And just when do you think that brake will occur?, right in the middle of a hard left hander turn. Think about that turn and picture you are now holding what steers/stops/makes the bike go in your hand and it is not connected to the bike. I took a soda can and wrapped it around the fork legs enough to take up the slack on the headlight ears, don't know if I would trust that on the clip-ons but don't see why it wouldn't work.

You can have some spacers made up or buy some 1-2mm sheet and wrap it around the fork tube.
Or a soda can

good god man no!
if you cut it wider and try it you will just totally fuk it up,please don't do that
spread them back out and figger what size they really are and you can figger the difference if they are for 35mm then pretty easy to hand form some .020" shimstock(yer RD is 34mm) if they are for 36mm you need to machine a sleeve and split it
totally safe and ok to run a correctly fitted shim/spacer

Personally I wouldn't modify them or shim them, way too much riding on them to risk it. I'd just sell them and get a set the right size.

What Deacon said.

Besides, you can't take out some material to make it fit. The clipons are round and when you take out some (the redneck way) you make them oval - and they wont pinch all around anymore.

Clamps like that are designed in a way to keep a little space between both ends, ensuring the bolts are tight and everything is snug. If ends meet, you wont be sure about if it's tight enough or not around the fork legs (with a scaled torquewrench). Furthermore, by clamping them further then they were desinged for, you're also making in them oval, like in the first example.

Chopping some material out and welding it back and god knows whayt kinda hackjobs you can think of are oke when it's your neighbours kid's tricycle horn or sum.. but handlebars on crotchrockets?

You can easily sell them on eBay nowadays with the hipsters #swag #yolo #caferacer #vintage #barnfind tags, probably for more then new ones will cost ya.

Long story short, GET THE RIGHT ONES.
Word of advice, GET THE RIGHT ONES.

Really, don't ride with them.

Are they DIY? the welds on the bars to clamps look to be a little small or dented?

that's it there fuked up so sell them to some other poor sap

Thanks for the great and fast answers!

They very well might be DIY. I might look at using a shim, definately not gonna cut them.

Analogy time :

Say you are at a bar, and a hot chick grabs you and drags you back to her place. She rips of your clothes and you are about to do the wild thing. So you reach in your pocket and grab a dinga. But it is way too big for the gear you are packing.

Just as you are about to slide it in, she says "P.S. I have AIDS"

Do you keep going and hope the massively oversized franga doesn't come off?

End of analogy.

It might look good but if it is going to kill you then don't do it.

Best analogy ever, nice job :)

I can see gaps in the weld in that pic. Throw them away.

I see it too....Imagine the handlebar coming off at speed...Yikes!!!

Throw them away....

i see said the blind...i wouldn't use them like that either, but i would keep them, make them right
with a couple well designed coroner gussets and finnish welding...because it doesn't look like the clamping bit is badly done
that's just me, they dont take up much room hanging on the wall waiting for the right project, heck they could be moddded into some udder yoose

You know, I had an idea...Sell them to someone who is building a motorcycle they don't intend to ride...

Seen a few of them around.....

Won't mater if the bars are dangerous if the motorcycle isn't ridden....

Nah, toss em....don;t want anyone getting hurt.

Shitty welds are shitty welds. If its bad there, who's to say it isn't bad in other places. Welds can look great and still break. Though, its not YOUR ass on the line so who cares. Juat weld some more crap on and use them. ;)
