Club Idea

Hey fellow Tonners! Say, been thinking here. Has anyone thought of making Do The Ton a national/international club with chapters in all states/countries? I have noticed a growth in bobbers and cafe's in Minnesota and thought it would be fun to start a club with direct links to DTT.com. Any comments, advice welcome.

p.s. even thinking that as part of membership dues would give the member premium access to DTT as well.

Well, I want to start an offline club that could also be online and don't want to step on toes either. One of those things where rallys can be organized regionally, nationally, internationally and what not. Also a way to grow the club too.

Lots of guys do meet ups, and the like. I think giving it another name would be a good call. I don't know that Tim would be cool with an unofficial DTT.com club, especially if dues are involved.

On another note, most of the guys around here aren't so big on labels. The only successful meets/rides usually seem to be pretty informal. Not the most structure oriented group of wankers around here it seems.

This is actually something a few buddies and I here locally have been talking about for years now. There are some real cool, low key social clubs out there. Think the Half Fast guys in Chicago, the Cycle Zombies out in Nor Cal, and so on. I like the idea of a sort of collective kinda deal. Everyone pitches in to rent a shop space, everyone helps their fellow members get it done, group rides and event organization, etc... Very similar to DTT here, but a little more personal maybe? Anyhow, Id be interested to see what ya come up with as Im in the process of trying to organize something similar.

we are all united. just because we dont meet in a clubhouse doesn't mean that we aren't. Many of us rock DTT patches, and I know I'm not the only guy whos met other DTTers in real life.

That's exactly what I'm talking about and being able to tie in to DTT as well. Everyone helping everyone. And the foundation is everyone loves to ride and modify. I'm all about the social club idea. Great way to meet new people who share the same passions.

Back in the day there were NO organised clubs for Cafe Racers.

You had the usual anorak one marque clubs and pure race clubs - and before anyone else hollers up - the 59/69 club was more of a youth club with motorcycles. It was also restricted geographically to the London area,

This was in a time before the Internet and even most homes in the UK were without [ 1950's ] landline telephone connection.

That left the Transport Caffs and later - Coffee Bars as the main INFORMAL meeting places.

But apart from the NSA [ National Sprint Association ] and the Brands Hatch Clubs I, together with most of my riding mates didn't belong to a regular club.

A few of the bigger caffs issued their own "club" patches, but there was no formal club structure The Salt Box [ near Brands] was one.

I guess the natural geography of the US and huge distances would prclude any local "club" activity.

Anyway - here you have like minded riders / builders "meeting" on an almost daily basis !

I kind-of thought this was what the regional forums were all about.
Contacting folks near you and organizing rides and wrench sessions.

Clubs are for baby seals.

Really though, thats a touchy subject.
I know a couple guys who started a car club. A good bunch of guys. But in their enthusiasm to bolster their numbers, they wound up with a bunch of assholes in their club. The core guys have quit and now there's a skin head contingency in the club. It all went horribly wrong. Not saying thats gonna happen to you, but when you make open invitations, you'll have to weed thru the lowest common denominator.

If your serious about starting a club, start by putting together a close group of friends. Give it time to build. Sort out the ones who aren't in it for the right reasons, the bandwagon jumpers and assholes. The club will form itself.

Thanks. The reason for the club is to socialize more. Finding others of both sexes that share the same passions. Motorcycles. As we get older and move further from high school and traditional college, social networking gets tougher. I have already learned the hard way that if she aint got a bike, 50/50 chance she'll understand. :D But, at the same time want to grow my social networks in all areas. And to learn more about bikes, building, fabrication. as well as the skills to do such. Like learning to weld. :D Thanks guys for the input.

man, the vests are pretty sweet though,... i hear chics dig when dudes go shirtless under the vests. oh yeah.. rock'n roll fellas!

True story. I was in DC for a wedding. We arrived at our hotel downtown. Checking in, I noticed a bunch of dudes in leather vests and leather pants. Huh, I thought, must be a biker convention. Huh, I thought again, I didn't see any bikes? As we got on the elevator, the door closing, I got a glimpse of a guy carrying what looked like a very large X cross with bondge restraints. Surely not! We got off the elevator on the 3rd floor... and were met with the scedule for the S&M semiars. "Care and feeding for your slave, raising children in a M/S home, etc. We had walked into a leatherdaddy convention. Now thats some kinda club!
