clutch starter problem

I cant figure out why the clutch starter will rarely engage and turn the crank. New rollers, springs, and caps in the clutch starter. Has anyone any idea why this is happening. CHeck out the vid. In the vid the bike never starts which i didnt expect to i just wanted to see the rotor turning ...all you see is the starter chain turning and an occasional rotor turning.

Well something isn't catching on the starter clutch. I've never taken the rotor and clutch gear off so I can't really say for sure. You'll need to pull it out again and see what's going on.

I have looked at again and still can seem to figure it out...i wonder if the clutch gear itself is worn (the section that the clutch starter rollers ride on) ....i dont know but will see what i can find out.

figured out the prob...took some advice from "dinosaurtharoars" on CB450DOHC group also. And my suspicions were right as well as his experience. The new gear i ordered from http://www.cmsnl.com measured about 1.660 in where the worn gear measured about 1.439 in ...this is where the rollers on the clutch starter ride. The inner diameters (diameters where the gear fits on crankshaft) were pretty close. So try and remember this thread if any of you have the same problem down the road.

out of curiousity, is it ok if a little oil comes out of the alternator cover? my brother (works on lots of different motors) was surprised to see oil there. i told him i would ask.
thanks. glad you got that figured out

yeah mine has some oil coming out of it also....i do believe it is normal.....even my '02 zx12R has some coming out of the cover when remove it. If you look under the alternator rotor you will see a passage. Even the manual says it will sling some oil if you are using a timeing light to look at the marks on the rotor.

I am having the same problem. What exactly is the solution?

think i may have misunderstood the question......i was thinking oil flicking out of the stator area with the cover off while using a timing light to check the ignition or when you first pull the cover off. If you are talking about oil leaking with cover on and just sitting there i too have that prob. i am going to put another left side cover on it and check the surface area where it touches the left case side.
Also make sure the gasket hasnt been pushed out when tightening the screw. Will also check the surface on the engine case for any scratches or deep nics. Will let u know when i fig it out or.....you all can let me know if you fig it out sooner.

Oil coming out is normal. The problem I am having is my starter clutch not engaging the stator, just like in the video. I installed new springs, caps, and rollers and it worked better for a couple of turns, then started slipping again.

oh ok...then i was correct in my understanding...yeah i changed springs, caps etc.....but you need to change the starter gear on the crank behind the clutch starter .....that is what fixed my problem that i showed in the video.

the big gear in the middle is what you need to replace...the one you see in the photo is the old one that i didnt find out til after assembly that i needed to replace it.

Where did you get a new one from?
