Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Longhorn, Thanks for the compliment. The exhaust are stock head pipes but flipped sides (Left on Right & Right on Left) This brought them out at front of engine a little but pointed under and center of frame. Then there is about a 6" Straight piece with a large radius coming back out. This got the exhaust out of the way of my rear sets, was easy and looked different than the norm.

It has been hard to make progress lately with the heat, but I have made progress even though I started a CB750 build in the middle of the CM, and a have had a couple distractions,

Distraction #1 - Chain, Oil/Filter Change and anew Clutch Cable On the CB750K1
Distraction #2 - $200 '74 CB550K0 - Quickey Clean Up and Bratified, still need Mirrors, Tail Light and Gauges
Distraction #3 - #300 '73 CB350F - Clean it up aquire missing parts and store away until I get the '74 K4 & CM Done.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Stay tuned I have been working all night long now that I have the tins back and weather has been cooler. I'll be posting pics tomorrow when there is more light.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

So the Engine is in. Front Wheel on. All electrical components in. Harness and Cables run tight, made some adjustments to the harness, splitting some sections from the harness in different places so that the route better. Basically a stock harness with the engine wires extended so connectors are under the seat and Wires run in between air pods so its clean between the engine and frame.

I need to clean and polish the Wheels and Brake Plates. and will be polishing the clutch cover when I have it off to do the clutch.

The guy I had paint the Tank, Seat and Headlight forgot to paint the Headlight. I installed another similar old one I had laying around until I get my painted one.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Tank Lays on nice and easy no interference from wire or cable. Had to put the Gauge in the "Stand In" headlight to get a feel for it. Seat still Fits Nice just like the original pan in the same way.

Can't wait to get the rear wheel and the exhaust on, but I have to resolve the replacement of the lower shock bushings in the swing arm first.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Thanks guys, Once I had the three big pieces to the puzzle (Frame, Engine, Tins) it's been all my free time on it and some very late nights.

All I can say is don't loose faith, it has taken me 3 years, 6 Months and 13 days to get to this point ( bought it on 3/28/09). I have had a lot of distractions and diversions along the way.

Maintenance of my 1971, CB750K1
Purchase of a 1974, CB750K4 Frame for MY Next Project.
Purchase and part out of CBR600 (To keep the Forks, Brakes, Rear-sets and Wheels for K4 project)
Purchase and part out of a CB750Fwith a truckload of parts (To keep the engine for K4 project)
24 Hour Craigslist Flip of a 1949 Indian chopper ($$$$)
Purchase and part out of a 1978, CB750K8 (Hobby $ & a few parts for K4 project)
Purchase and refurb of a 1974, CB550K0 (Fell in love with this one gonna keep it)
Purchase of a 1973, CB350F (Not sure about this one yet, was too good a deal to pass up)
Purchase of a 1975, CB750K5 (Knocked the ugly off and fixing the butcher jobs to flip this one)

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

this little one will turn out great i like the superhawk headlight suits the bike.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Been a great little bike to cut my "Build" teeth on and get over the fear to have a vision and see it to the end (well close at this point).

Still need to get the right Headlight From My Painter then do all the wiring inside the shell it is a little deeper than the "Stand In" on there now so lotsa room for connectors etc. Still need to press out the rest of the shock lower bushing out of the swing arm powdercoater left part in. More detailing of the wheels and brake back plates. Cover for the starter relay (That's a long story didn't think I was going to need it). Fab a brake/speedo cable holder for the forks. Chain & Rear Brake Linkage.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Thanks Yogi, the drawing was the basic concept of changing to the 400A Tank and then chopping a second tank for the Seat Bump.

Got a few more things done. I have decide to just assemble most everything snug and then once I know I am done go through and Torque everything to spec. I have had to take a few things apart in the assembly and it has made it a lot easier. I am almost to the point of doing that.

I made some changes in the design from the final mock up and had a few things to fabricate. I decided to drop the front fender late in the design process and had not considered the loss of the cable support on the fender. I had a couple aluminum brackets I had been keeping knowing I could use them. I used one to make a support off of one of the fender bolts and the brake stay bolt. The end has a Loop like on OEM Fenders for the cables to go through.

While working out the rear sets and brake pedal I was hung up on using the brake pull rod and back plate lever and keep their orientation to the swing arm pivot. I ended up turning the original brake pedal lever and pivot into a "slave". It works great, but was ugly hanging off the frame. I needed to cover it and blend it into the bike. With another Aluminum Swing Arm Mount Plate I had turned upside down, after some cutting and grinding turned it into a cover. (It started out just like the one above it) I used a piece of 1/16th aluminum to cover the upright portion. I still need to do some finish filing, sanding and polishing, but I think it does the trick. working on some other details I'll post when done.

Anymore pics of the rear brake? really interesting.

There is another close up pic on page one of the thread. Basically I cut off the original pedal very close to its pivot point, then added plate to the bottom and outside to support a new push arm. The new brake pedal is linked with an adjustable rod to the new "push" lever. SO....you depress the brake pedal that pushes the rod that pushes on the old brake pedal pivot that in turn pivots to pull on the original brake rod. This way as the the swing arm moves it doesn't affect the relationship of the braking action to swing arm.

See this thread........http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=9287.0

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Thanks Frankenfe That was a good picture of what you're doing. I've been trying to figure out a way to mount a disc on the back. I know the drum is adequate but I like to be dipherent and it reduces all the linkages to practically nill.

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

Adapting a Rear Disc should not be terrible Difficult if you use the wheel disc caliper from same bike. If you do all that you should have to work out are spacers and caliper stay on the swing arm. then just mounting a master and actuating it with your brake pedal.

I would try and use ta wheel with the same size axle as well, not that you couldn't go a little larger. I think the CM/CB's are 17mm rear. There are alot of lists on the net that give you sizes, here is one : http://scandalon.com/2009/06/motorcycle-rear-axle-diameters/

But the 400's never came with disc in the back. or are you saying find a bike with all that included? I know the cb750 came with a disc and don't they have comstars as well? Thanks for the link I'll look at it.

I just want to be that guy whose bike has guys scratching their heads trying to figure out my model. lol

Re: My CM400T Cafe Build - Now a CMB400 Frankenfe

well it appears most of the 750's have a 20mm axle but that's a big list for 17mm I'm sure I can make something work. Thanks again Frankenfe.
