Compact Battery for a Cafe?

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong
This has probably been discussed here before, so if anyone can point me in the right direction of a thread about it would be much appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, like the Maviryk or something similiar. My tail piece is so small
I would like to use something like that if I could. So what's the GOOD/BAD/UGLY about them. My bike doesn't have a kickstart
so it would have to be able to crank a 300cc twin

Thanks

I have the same problem. I have a CB750 that IS kickstart only, but I'm running a battery that is much too small, it is leaking acid after long rides and its really annoying having to thoroughly clean everything under my seat after my rides. I'm also looking for the smallest battery available that still have 12 volts/12amps. This link in the post above me looks like a nice battery. I might try that one out.

Right on BArTY, I would think that as long as you keep it to 12ah, you should be fine with regards to overcharging.

The problem is the charging amperage.
Even if regulator switches voltage the generator will still provide too much amperage.
On CB750 you could probably swap out stator coils with CB350/360/400f or re-wind with less coils to get lower output.
It's really the only way to prevent overcharging
Just remember, volts don't charge batteries, amps do (which is why battery chargers are rated in amps not volts)

pj- I think we're on the same wavelength, but let me make sure. You're right, charging is all about the amps. And if I recall, a good rule of thumb is making sure the charge your battery is getting isn't more than 1/4 it's amp-hours? (not talking about trickle charging; just while the bike's running) So a 12Ah battery shouldn't be getting more than 3 amps...
In barty's case, say his little battery was a 6Ah, and the charging system was still putting out 3 amps, giving it way too much and causing it to boil.
Am I remembering somewhat correctly here? It's late...

I've been learning about this as well. In my case, "my little battery" is only 2.3A  It's time I figured out a new battery box situation so I can fit a larger battery.

Haha I know... Doh! So I've been looking at 12V 12Ah batteries for the smallest possible solution and they are all a bit too large to fit under my seat. Smallest I could find was 6x4x4". I have found smaller ones with lower Ah but I'm not sure the lowest I can safely go. Would I be able to safely run a 12V 9Ah for example? Or even a 12V 7Ah?

You know it just depends on the output of your charging system. If you measured that, you could find out how low you could go.

How do I check this? I think I have a voltmeter but I don't recall ever using it...

Honestly I don't know, short of getting an inductive amp probe, which you hook up between the battery and charging system. I bet if you googled it, somebody somewhere has posted your bike's output.

I have previously run an Aprilia RS125 with a 3Ah battery for almost a year, and it did not boil or in any way malfunction. I was running full road lighting and electric start. The bike had a 12v 180W charging system. I have also previously used a 9Ah battery in a Suzuki GS850. Its recommended battery is a 14Ah item. I did not perform any long rides (100+ miles) on it but it seemed fine around town.

For the 750, and based on my past experinces, I think you should be able to get away with either a 6Ah or 9Ah battery.

Ok cool. I'm thinking the 9Ah would be plenty enough as well. I mean my bike actually runs great with the 2.3Ah I have in it now, it just seems to boil on longer 100+ mi rides. I could honestly probably get away with the 6Ah as well. I'll make a 9Ah fit just to make sure though. Thanks guys

For rough and ready you don't need inductive amp, you only need a piece of 8 gauge cable at least 19.1" long (use longer, measuring point has to be at 19.1")
Disconnect a battery lead and connect it in as extra cable then measure in parallel in millivolts, its a direct indication of amps in lead.
Don't remember if you divide bv by 10 or 100 though? (eg 800mv = 8a or 0.8a?)

When I was out at the bike races at Laguna Seca I saw some thing that caught my eye. Lithium Ion motorcycle batteries. There size and weight is half that of any even the smallest lead acid motorcycle battery. The vendor had a beatiful Norton Cafe racer, and this battery had no problems starting it. And due to its compact size it was tucked up nice and need inside the tail. Plus the vendor displayed the quick disconnect stating that you could easly toss the battery in your pocket. I haven't been able to find the brand that he was carring but there are a few out there. No special charging requirements, or mods, just hook it up and go. Prices do seem to fluxuate, but when the time comes this is the battery I am going with.

I too have been looking into this type of battery. I have heard that a lot of the R/C guys are pulling apart Dewalt battery packs to build their own packs for their cars, so all the stuff to do it is out there. I have also seen threads on another site about guys running these home built Li Ion batteries to start their race bikes, SV 650s.

These are the batteries I was talking about. Besides the link you have above, does anyone know of any other places to get the good ones or of companies with quality batteries?

Well the guy I am buying my battery from is local to me. Kyle Racing in Seaside, CA. He does not have them listed on his web site but he does sell them for about $200.

He runs a good shop he used to work on my GSXR 1100, SV 650, and my GSXR 1000.
