Cost to make this seat

This is the shape Im thinking about going for with my bike. How much would it cost to make this at home? Is it cheaper to just buy it?

Thanks,

For the fibreglass seat that I made, I bought a kit from a local marine fibreglass store that came with more than enough material to make one. Could probably even make two. The only thing needed after that was body filler to smooth out. The kit cost $60 and body filler and sandpaper was < $15. However, you'll need some material (foam, etc) to create the plug, but that is usually not expensive.

I read through your post and your seat turned out really nice.

Maybe for the cost, it'd be cheaper for me to just buy the seat. Knowing me, I'd screw up the fiberglass, have $15 in sandpaper and end up having to make another one.

You can get a very nice quality seat from "roccitycafe" I think you can find him here on the board. They're around $100.

I just received my Roccitycafe seat today and am very impressed with the finish. Prior to the purchase I spoke with him about some questions and concerns I had. Every question was answered and he even went into detail on how I can modify the seat for fitment on my bike. Shipping was 3 days and the total cost including shipping was only $115.00. Great product, great price.

I'd agree :), but seriously, if you're not planning on getting into fiberglass a lot, it's a lot less of a pain in the neck to buy a seat that came from someone that already made all their fiberglass mistakes!!! When I started out where you're at now, I didn't realize how hard it was to get a really good surface finish on a glass part, and I made a lot of parts that were crap before I got good enough to start making molds and selling my stuff, so honestly, it's a great hobby to start, if that's what you want to do, just don't expect your first go to be a work of art ;D... so to get the bike on the road and looking good in the shortest time? Yeah, I'd pick one up from a fiberglass maker.
