Couple of local bikes... what are they worth?

Considering a couple of local bikes to "cafe"... The first is a '73 Honda CB450. It does not run. Odometer reads about 12,000 miles. Owner is asking $800 for it, but that sounds a bit steep to me.

The second bike is a 1975 Yamaha RD200. Odometer reads 3132 miles. No info on this bike yet, I don't know if it runs.

Any thoughts on what these bikes are worth would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

was there any reason given why it doesnt work? and is there any way you could check compression or continuity in any of the wiring etc before you potentially purchase.

OH....even better question, do they have (clean) title's in hand?

I haven't had a chance to speak with the seller... yet. I've been calling the number listed, with no answer, not even voicemail. I also tried the phone number for the business they're in front of, and left a message at that number. Hopefully I'll have more info soon. Thanks again for the advice!

That's an insanely expensive price for a non-running 450 especially sitting outside covered with snow. $250 is more in line and only IF it has a title and only IF the motor turns over. You could at least make your money back by selling the parts if it didn't work out.

That said... they do look like they're too nice to be sitting in the weather, that's a crime.

I use the rule of thumb: $1 per cc. for older bikes. That's about what they are worth in the book. So a 450 that doesn't run, I'd offer $350 max for the Honda. $500 for the pair. If you want the Honda bad max out at $500.

ya man that is way too much, I got my 450 running great with only 3200 miles for $800 that one looks pretty gross

thanks for the input, guys. I was kinda thinking along the same line... max $450 for the honda. I still haven't been able to contact the seller, maybe out-of-town? Anyway, I'll post what I find out. Thanks again!

still can't get in touch with the seller... :-\ Bikes are still sitting out in the snow. Will keep trying...

It's been a couple of weeks, still no luck talking to the seller. I don't think he really wants to sell them. I've left messages with persons at the business, and phone messages. Not a single call back. Since then, we've also gotten about 20 more inches of snow :-[ ! The bikes are pretty much burried right now. Oh well...

How bout this one...

1975 Honda CB750

Local bike, clean title, starts and runs fine, 3500 orig miles (per his ad). missing a few "odds and ends" such as headlight (bucket is there, no lens/ring), chain, and from the pics, it looks like the rear shocks are missing. He is asking $1000

I'm probably going to see it in person tonight after work.

"Runs fine" without carburetors??? Nice trick!

Good clean looking bike though. Price is pretty good if it will run and lights all work. You can probably get it cheaper since the carbs are off as that scares most buyers off (not me though 8) )

nice pickup on the pics mitchellsk!! I spoke with the seller, carbs not installed, but all recently "professionally rebuilt". I'll know more after I see it...

didn't get a chance to check out the cb750... but I did find another bike !!

What do you guys think of this 1977 Suzuki gs550?

The seller has had the bike for about 20 years, last time it was ridden was 2 years ago. Clean title. Dead battery so couldn't start it. Engine turns and compression feels decent from kickstart. Everything worked the last time ridden including lights and guages.

Overall pretty rough shape, saw it in person today.... rims/spokes and forks are rusty and pitted. Aftermarket "performance" 4 into 1 exhaust (ceramic coated gloss black) in decent shape, some rust. Inside of gas tank has some rust, would need to be cleaned/treated. All emblems are missing, horrible flat black paint job compliments of current owner.

Anyway... all this for $350.

I had a similar vintage, perhaps slightly newer, GS550MZ at one time. It was a good bike and it even had the same MAC pipe on it that one does. The Suzi 4 cylinders have a great bulletproof reputation and hold up well, but the bike, in my opinion, didn't handle real well. I called it "Dolly" because it always seemed to be a bit top heavy. 8) My taste? The CB450 or the RD are probably the ticket, but I tend to shy away from larger numbers of carburators. I would wonder if that 750 has seen too many well-meaning-but-inept wrenches in it's life? My two cents worth.

well... I took a pass on the gs550. cool bike, but condition was pretty poor. If anyone interested, let me know, and I will forward the seller's info.

I also took a pass on the 750... more money than I wanted to spend right now.

I did pick up a bike though! I found a 1971 Honda CL350 w/ 12k miles. It has a clear title and is in decent cosmetic shape. It has a little rust, but I think everything will polish out nicely. It has a horrible paint job with a bunch of '70s pinstriping, but that is easily addressed with sandpaper ;D . It is not running, and I'm expecting the worst (i.e., engine rebuild), but I only paid $100 for it! All electrical works and is in decent shape, tires are good. I will post pics when I have some, I have to pick it up next tuesday.

As an update on the original bikes in this thread. they are still sitting in the snow. I've tried a couple times to reach the seller again, but get no response... wierd. ???
