Craigslist, whats up with people any more?

Out

Been Around the Block
This is the second time I have made a deal with someone over an hour away - 3 hours one way this time - only to have the rug tugged out. We speak, we are normal and discuss a price/time, only to have the dude sell it to someone else after we clearly agree it was sold. Man that burns me up. A mans word should mean something. Last year I sold a mini bike and a tractor to hear, OH it sold today, on the day we agreed I would come pick it up. I dont get it. I held a pair of machines for 2 months so a guy could drive from Nevada to NY to pick up and it was not hard to do at all. Anyone else having this problem? To me this is unreasonable.

Unfortunately, I've had it happen too. Seems to me, with Facebook Marketplace, I don't have this kind of stuff happen nearly as often. Maybe having your profile relatively accessible makes people a little more honest.

Some want the first cash that shows up. I always call before going. Bought a GoldWing recently (FB marketplace) that had been listed Sale Pending since Thanksgiving. I continued to contact and let them know I was still interested. I don't know if the prospective buyer backed out or what, but finally they said to come up. 2 hours one-way. I called before leaving.

Goes both wsys, too. Many years ago (~1979) I sold my house in Charleston. A lady put $500 earnest money on it and it went off the market - for three months. Finally she asked for her money back and both my realtor and mortgage company checked - she hadn't even applied for a loan. This was days of 14% interest and she had 8 1/2% guaranteed minority loan available. Mortgage company was POed and tied 8 1/2% to the house for any VA/FHA approved for two weeks. Two couples were pushing each other off the step to the realtor's door the next morning to get it. The lady had NAACP lawyers write a letter to the realtor threatening to sue to get her earnest money back. The realtor just handed it to her instead of the hassle. Oh well, I got $900 more for the house than it originally listed.

Craig's List recently started charging a fee to post up listings.. I think that will help root out some of the dirt bags, but honestly, when dealing with the general public in any capacity I just expect people to be shit human beings, I'm never disappointed or surprised.

We lived in Charleston SC for 6 years - miss it a bunch, especially when it is snowing like today.
I guess every failed deal brings around another good one. Gotta stay positive even when you feel burned up I suppose, although the older I get the less I like BS.

I haven't done any deals on FBmarket but I've done many on Craiglist with no real issues. I usually expect a it to be sketchy or at least interesting and I haven't been disappointed so far. Hope for the best and prepare for otherwise. I've passed on a few deals when it didn't feel right.

Dealing with strangers and their word over a cash deal is tough. Especially sight unseen and in some offsite location. It's part of the process. Sometimes you work for it but the deal still gets away, usually because people can be jerks.

I had a guy show up with $400 for a motor we had agreed was $600. He actually believed he was going to take it home, said "we had a deal".....Huh?

Over a lifetime it probably only averages about one dick per dozen, they just leave more of an impression.

Whats $200 between perfect strangers right. Wonder how he would have liked to find 2/3 of the engine when he got there. It amazes me how some minds work.

Two weeks ago I made a deal to buy a motor. I asked when I could pick it up and finally the guy decides on Monday that Saturday would be a good day. But only between 6-7pm. I tagged him several times asking for the address and never got a response. So Saturday morning at 10am, I sent him another message asking about the address. At 1pm he responds with I was just getting ready to send you the address. Can up be here between 8-9am? I replied back "Today?". He say's yes. I reply "It's 1pm now!". He goes "It is!". I never did get the address. So I didn't buy the motor.

Selling on Craigslist. Middle son got a new job in Virgina and wanted to sell his track car. 2002 Focus 7X3 with a host of aftermarket suspension and performance upgrades. We posted it on the old Craig and within 10 minutes we were asked if we would trade it for guns, drugs, or sex (both male and female offers). One guy said if we would hold it until he got the money together his wife would give us oral sex and maybe more. Sorry...sold for cash only.

Were those offers per chance from Lenoir City, Lafollete or Lake City? Seem to be some strange people in those places.

People have no sense of decency.
I once drove 3 hours to buy 3 cb350's.
Rented a trailer, called before Left, all good.
He calls me at the 2:45 minute mark and told me he sold them just now.
Luckily I had someone with me who convinced me not to go kill the guy.

I think most were Atlanta dwellers likely within the perimeter where there is also a lot of strange people. I pulled the ad after about an hour after all the craziness started. We ended up selling the car at the North Georgia Swap Meet.

That does suck. Hell with that guy.

A REAL friend would've helped you hide the body.

Craigslist strikes again, 1 bad, but 2 good this time.... The bad was a 77 KZ750 four, free engine, low compression, nice header, 5 miles away, for $200 as the phone deal was made. Plans were a part out to fund others. Day of pick up an email comes..."I forgot it was on ebay too and I have a bid from Ca." We are in NY mind you. I Did not even respond, BUT... the good - I will post on new purchases tomorrow with pics. Two good deals in 1 day and even near each other:)

I don't hold anything. But i tell that to people right away. As a seller, of all things household, jeep parts, car parts etc, i've had too many buyers whose excitement wanes after theys sleep on it, and i'm back to square 1 trying to find a buyer again. Just as frustratinng. I don't even know why people commit if they are not certain they will go through with it. Ridiculous.

So i always say, its only yours if you show up here with money. If someone else shows up first, i'm selling it to them.
