Crankcase cleaning

I was wondering if anyone had a guides for breaking down the crankcase and really cleaning the parts. I'm kind of a noob, and I don't want to put any cleaners/chemicals where they really don't belong. The motor does turn and it recently had the top end rebuilt, but the crankcase is pretty dirty.

Any suggestions are really appreciated!

What engine and where are you located?

Vapor blasting is awesome but not common.

Soda blasting is the most common and likely easiest to find solution. Low risk too as its easy to clean up.

Soap and hot water will take care of most of the dirt and grease. A brush and simple green handles the most of the remainder. Anything left, soda will take care of.

Soap and water again when you're done with the soda and you should be good to go.

I've heard of people using diesel to clean out crankcases, don't know if I'd try that myself though.
You could always just take off the oil pan and clean it up, a lot of crud gathers on them.
