Sell the many to fund the few
So over the years I have bought, fixed and sold lots of bikes. I always run across peoples "Fixes" here are a few that were on a recent bike I purchased. What have you run across?

I've used the old aluminum foil on the busted fuse trick before. Granted, only until i could get to the store to get a new fuse ???
i like the wire nut. Electrician?

Here is one i came across on my xs850. That is a nut to emt conduit and split keychain rings replacing the rear axle spacer. Blew my away... I kept this as a reminder of all the stupid things people can do.

I've seen live .22 long rifle rounds used for fuses. And strips of beer cans shimming-up rod bearings.

In my old motor that came on the bike, the previous owner used JB weld to patch up seals under the side cover.

We will do that at a race meet if a seal start to leak or blow out and needs to be mechanically restrained for the rest of the weekend. And if that works, sometimes it doesn't get removed until the motor is rebuilt. I hate that stuff, but it does have its uses.

So far I see a bunch of stuff that worked. Looking forward to seeing something catastrophic.

The problem is if it "works" for a very short period of time or a long time its not a proper fix and can cause Huge issues. Mainly I hate it when you buy a bike and its "been fixed" in a crap way and they don't tell you. At some of the shops I have worked at I have seen a tun of stuff the was "Fixed" just enough to get it workingish when looking over a bike someone wants to buy.

Oh man, that is one of my favorite subreddits. As someone who's spent a lot of time fixing and selling used cars, man people can do some dumb stuff!

My personal favorites from my CB360?

I have no idea why the bike wouldn't run right!

Re: Crap "fixes"

I Should have taken a pic , but on a cbr I picked up cheap to flip this winter someone had stripped out the gear selector linkage on the trans shaft . The linkage was aluminum and from Honda pricey and a used one could not be found . So according to some atv guys who have problems with the pinch bolt coming loose like this one did you cut a strip of beer can wrap around shaft , tap lever back on and install punch bolt .

Worked great ! Put fifty miles on it to insure the function warned the new owner and It's gone .

Re: Crap "fixes"

Pvc pipe cut and fiber glassed over the rear shock mounts on my xs650. Not much meat left on the shock mounts!

[/quote]Yep even scarier that I rode it around for a couple months not knowing it was mostly pvc pipe and fiber glass. Here is the repair job of the "fix"

Damn nice fix there!

I don't have pictures of it, but I was going through an old '80s BMW 535i that was rust free and straight, but had some mechanical issues. I pulled the wheels off of it to check the suspension and brakes. The front brakes had lots of pad and good rotors. The rears, however, were another story. The only thing left of the rotors was the "hat" over the hub and a thin sliver of steel clamped between the pads on one side, and nothing on the other side! The pistons were so far out of the calipers that brake fluid was starting to weep past the seals.

I drove the car 30 miles on the expressway like that. Oh, also, the hydraulic "booster" was shot, so I had either power steering or power brakes, but not both at the same time. Pucker factor 11.
