Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Thanks Paul. I know how much you like the cxs and yours are really nice.
Cxman. Good to know. I put ATF in my GL forks and it worked well but that could be because the old oil was so bad. I need to buy more as the bottle fell over and leaked. So I will just get fork oil this time.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
OK so did not get much time on the weekend but did get out to the local parts guy and scored a fan, horn, and some nicer rear shocks off a newer knighthawk. also picked up a pressure washer so I may use that to do some of the parts, we'll see. I put the super rusty headlight bucket in a bucket of vinigar along with headlight ears and left them there for a week or 2, the rust is almost completelt gone and took no scrubbing and the chrome actually shines, so they may not get painted now. Next I am going to put the fenders in if I can get a container they will submerge in. I'tt try to get some picks soon but I will hopefully get a few hours on her to clean and assemble some bits.
Still need a fan switch and I think a temp guage will come in handy too.,
Thanks Rich, I still need to brace it a bit more with a couple more 2x4's but it already is making it much easier to store the parts, move around and assemble. Once I get the motor finished and cleaned, I will get it on the table, bolt the frame to it at the right hieght and strap it down. Then I can put all the bits and pieces back without too much trouble
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Assembley is beginning for real. Mocked up and painted and installed battery box. Rear end is close. Just need to make a tail light bracket and move forwards. Cleaned the rust out oc the rear fender and coated inside with rubber undercoat spray. Pics of progress
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Thanks, I got part of the tailight bracket made last night, if I get a few tonight I should have that mounted and see where I am going to hide the rest of the electrical bits. I made a cowel for the rear that I may be able to hide most of the bits.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Ha, I wish. My end of may date is gone but I should pick up speed here shortly. Depends on how fancy I want to get with wiring and dash etc. I may just get it good enough for this season and then change it up over winter.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
I think it's fateful that you popped up in my build thread to offer advice while you had this build going on- and tomorrow I am also picking up a CX500. I'm subbed now, late, but better than never. Great inspiration so far man, you'll be seeing more of me
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Cool. What model year? This one is an 82 and all the little issues the CX can have are factory corrected. If earlier there is a few things you will want to check, non major but can ruin your day if not addressed. Good luck and I will check in on yours when you get going on it.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
I wouldn't say all issues were fixed. The mechanical seal is still something to be replaced while the engine is out regardless of year and the later models had an automatic cam tensioner which you still need to keep an eye on. As the chain stretches over time the automatic tensioner slackens and the chain will start to wear away a small section inside the engine just like the earlier models can do. The stator in the later models was better though as there aren't the issues of the high and low speed coils failing.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Thanks Paul for the clarifaction. I checked those things on mine and all were good. My point was before you get to far into one of these, check the list for the model year you have to make sure the fixes are either done or do them so you aren't tearing into it 6 months after you finish building it to fix something then.
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Thanks for the wisdom- I believe it to be a 1981 CX500c that I'm picking up. A bit of an ugly duckling I feel but that's how my first bike is, and it's endearing. I'll share with you all as you have shared with me... Just a matter of minutes now!
Re: CX500 minor bob job - Forks sealed and table built, assembly soon.
Ok colour shot to see what it looks like. Wife thinks it clashs with the brown leather. I have no clue. What do y'all think? I got the tail light mount completed.
