CX500 PartII

All mounted, here's a few pics of the numerous brackets. It's extremley solid the only thing I might do is drill and tap the nut on top of the steering stem and make an upper support for the outer ends of the fairing but it depends how it goes at speed and if it vibrates at all.

The bracketry looks light weight but when it's all tyed together it works really well :) Tomorrow I'll try and put the wiring back together and take it for a run to see how it feels on the road, then it's all apart again for painting of the brackets and fairing and a wiring tidy up, also got to mount the flush indicators. Before I paint the brackets they'll get a going over with the flapper disk to round off the corners and generally tidy them up so they look like custom brackets and not shelf supports ;)

This may sound odd, and I just stumbled onto this thread, (amazing scoot you've got here) but what if you made a couple of 'filler' pieces that go under your seat to "level out" your eye more on the tank (from discussion on page 1). You could blend them where the dip is on the tank and it may not be as noticeable. Absolutely amazing job on the headlight install man. 8) 8) 8)

Got the headlight glass in and the indicators mounted, also made a new shifter, to suit the rearsets, from a CB750 shifter (in case I stuffed up I wanted the stocker still :) )

Here you go, nothing special. You see guys with CX's doing all sorts of complicated linkages etc but it's not really needed unless the rearsets are way back.

I just used some sold rod, slipped some pipe over it to get some real good leverage on it and bent away. The toe piece bend needed to be sharper so I had to cut opposite the bend first to get that sharp bend and then weld it up again. Once I know it's right and wont need major changes I'll put the rubber toe piece on I have off the CB750 shifter abd call it done.

Mad a new front guard over the weekend, I need to trim it properly and add some filler to smooth it out but it's getting there. I used some flyscreen cord to get a raised edge on it so it looks more factory and has a lip at the front and back. Should get it done over the Christmas holidays.

Taped up a spare wheel/tyre combo I had.

Just roughly cut out at the moment. I'll mount it to the stock brackets, it's shorter and lower profile than the factory guard.

wow the whole build is excellent. I'm subscribed and following it now. Love the color, too!

Nice work steve, I bet that is lighter than the 3/4" steel on too.

Weighed it, 268g, to put it in perspective that's less than the combined weight of my Galaxy S3 and house keys :) I'll weigh the stocker when I take it off but I'm guessing a substantial weight saving.

Finised the guard, it needs a couple of spots filled with spot filler but I'll give it a check over before I paint it and do those. Came out pretty well I think with a nice edge on it looking like it's rolled.

100% legal meeting tha ADR (Australian design rules) requirements and should actually still work as a mud guard :)

Nice work, I may steal that idea on the CX500 I am working on. The weight savings will be huge. I noticed you don't have the big ugly aluminum shroud around your rad. I like that, did you mount any stone protection over it for the fins?

Mike

No stone protection for the rad yet, thinking of getting some aluminium fly screen to put in front of it though.

I weighed the stock guard after I took it off the mounting bracket so it's just the bare guard, it was 718g so a decent weight saving percentage wise, and it all adds up on the CX since they are such a heavy bike stock.

Yep, saw that after I asked. I am thinking the same, I actually think the expanded metal one from the GL might be the same size. I am going to measure then see if I can score one cheap, less work for sure. Nice weight savings, may not seem like a lot but every little bit adds up for sure.

Added a bit of high tech today. I like to ride to clients but need to be able to take calls so it's tricky, also am not always 100% sure exactly where I'm going as they are all over the place, from Wollongong to Newcastle. Anyway, I got an ultimate addons tough case (waterproof as well) for my Galaxy S3. It mounts to one of the bolt holes that were used for the stock handle bars and has a ball joint on the back to make it adjustable. I also have the power kit for it and will wire that in tomorrow. Now I have a great waterproof GPS and can talk calls through the bluetooth headset AND see who is calling before I do. It doesn't really fit with the cafe theme but if it means I get to ride it more often then I'll make that sacrifice and the fairing does hide it a bit :)

Case is specifically for this phone, all the ports etc work and it is waterproof (not submersible but that shouldn't happen)

So going for some more performance, ordered some Mikuni VM34 carbs and the custom intakes etc. Should be here in a week or two.

While I'm waiting for the carbs I pulled a set of heads off of one of my spare engines. Valves are coming out for new valve seals and a good clean. Then I'll lap the valves and port match the heads to the new inlet stubs from the carbs. With this fairly simple work I should get 20% more power out of the CX (with the pods and freeflowing exhaust) as the stock carbs dont like pods at all and very rarely do they produce more power with pods. Torque will be up quite a bit as well and I'll end up with a CX that will wheelie off the throttle :)

Also ordered an electric fan off a Ducati so I can take the mechanical fan off as it runs on the end of the camshaft and slows throttle response and saps more HP. Basically I'm trying to put the Racer in Cafe Racer

Cheers
