Dealing with cracked paint under new layer.

Been Around the Block
Somehow didn't really notice when I primed my gas tank that the paint underneath was cracked. I applied my first layer of black and all of a sudden all these cracks appeared. My question is should I go and try and sand it out or will the cracks disappear after a few more layers of the paint?

Cheers

the only way to fix it properly is to strip it to bare metal, self-etching prime it, 2k prime it, block it, paint it, ten clear it. if you try and cheat it and sand it out and paint over that the cracks will come back in a couple months.

Did you clean the tank really well before you primed? Cracking in fresh paint usually is caused by contamination (most likely oil or gas). I would sand back down to the original paint, and keep sanding, and then clean it really well with dish soap and rubbing alcohol before you try and paint over it again.

im assuming that the original paint had crows feet in it but he couldnt see it till he put paint over it cuz it went into the cracks and made it more visible (meaning the new paint didnt crack the paint he went over was cracked and showed up only once painted)....in which case it must me stripped to bare metal, save yourself the aggrivation and chemically strip it.

Hmmm...Well I cleaned it up good before painting, but at any rate I'm gonna get at it and take it out and start painting again.
