Determining load

So I want to run all stock electrics on my rd350 aside from an upgrade to the headlight, and put in an all in one led taillight turn signal combo how do I determine what size battery I need? I'd like one physically smaller than stock. Thanks guys
 
You will most likely not be able to get a much smaller sealed lead acid battery. However, you can get a battery with the same capacity as the one you currently have, but get a lithium phosphate battery. It will be physically much much smaller. Or you can run a very small battery and a capacitor. The capacitor would be used to start the bike essentially, and the battery would be for anything under 2000rpm. To determine load is something I would probably not advise you in doing, since you asked about how to determine load. The most precise way would be by finding or calculating all the wattage ratings of each individual device/light on the bike, to figure out how may amps "current" you need to be producing.
 
What kind of headlight upgrade are you talking about? The OEM charging system won't cover much more than the OEM wattage bulb, even with a battery upgrade. You'll have to upgrade the charging system.
And as Alec mentioned, to get small, you'll have to go to the Lithium type batteries. They'll be roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes.
The AGM battery I run in my stock electronics '72 DS7 (RD250) is physically smaller than the OEM wet battery, but not by alot. Probably about 25-33% smaller.
Smajure runs a home security battery in his Chinoy upgraded charging/ignition electronics '75 RD350, and it's about half the size of my AGM battery.
 
I was looking at a halogen headlight unit. But let's say I keep the stock headlight and I go with this led tail light with the integrated turns. Then I get led turns for the front. What size battery do I need if everything else on the bike is stock? And what all would I need to do to wire in the tail light and turn signals? I'm gonna start a little study session in a second so maybe I can answer my own questions but feel free to answer. Thanks guys

I have an aftermarket headlight assembly on my DS7 that accepts a replacable halogen bulb. I use a halogen bulb in the OEM recommended 35w/35w. It's brighter than the original sealed beam. But not as bright as the 55w/65w halogens that were in my Hayabusa. From all I've read, your RD is not going to support something like a modern use 55w/65w bulb. The 40 year old charging system won't do it. Replacing all the other bulbs with LED's will take some of the stress off the system, but not enough.
As for the battery size? I have no idea. The battery in my DS7 is equivalent to the OEM wet cell battery, but it's a modern AGM battery. I have the 35w halogen headlight, LED signals, and LED taillight. It gave me over 4 years of trouble free service (i just replaced it last month).
The taillight you show should be a straightforward install. Looks to be five wires. Most likely a common ground, and one wire each for running light/brake light/right signal/left signal. You could keep the bullet style connectors that are on it, but you may have to fab up some extensions for some of the wires that won't reach.

In your charging system requirements research, check with the guys over at www.2strokeworld.com. Lotsa good info over there ;)
 
Thanks a lot redbird!i really appreciate it. from what i read in the electrical 101 i may need signal relays? but ill shoot over to 2sw and see what those guys say. Btw I'm a big fan of your avatars
 
Yes, you will need to upgrade the turn signal relay if you use LED signals. It's a simple swap, and digital relays are fairly cheap and available.

However, you can buy digital relays at just about any parts supplier. And others have used and sworn by them. I just stick with what I have experience and trust in.

You may need a different relay though. What year RD? Do you have a single indicator on the dash? Or one for each side?
