Diy really long pin punch

Ok I took a bike apart a couple months ago and to take the swing arm axle out I had to use an aluminum tent stake because our longest punch was a tapered punch and I didn't want to get it stuck although I got the stake stuck anyways, but my questions is could I take a long piece of round stock, weld on both ends so they're hard, then heat it up and cool it in a oil water mixture to harden it to use as a pin punch for axles? Or is there something out there already?

I use my hands... If you need to smash long bolts out, you're doing it wrong. And in case they're stuck, i just use a piece of round stock. No need to harden it.
