DIY: Shorten seat base

This is what I did to shorten my seat pan. The seat pan on my Yamaha is a simple pan that has two bolts at the rear and a hook at the front. I'm not sure how they are on CB's and RD's. Anyways, thought this may help someone.

I've extended the tank on the Yamaha by 5 inches. So I'd need to have a shorter seat.

So obviously you'd either have to cut it from the front or the rear. If you cut it from the rear, then you lose the mounting points. Moreover, the seat pan is shaped to clear the stuff below it. So if you cut it from the rear, then you'll be shifting the front end of the pan behind. Which means you'll be using the front section of the seat pan to mount onto the rear section that it is not shaped for. Confusing, I know.

The best option is to cut the section (front) of the seat that the tank has taken over. Doing this, you'd have the rear section in its original location. You may lose the hooks that were mounted at the front of the pan. But it isn't so hard to remove off and reweld it onto the seat pan again.

So thats exactly what I did. Since the tank is extended by five inches, I cut the front part of the seat by five inches. The hook that was up ahead below the base was removed and rewelded onto the "new" front section. Another issue that sprung up was that the "new" front was wider than the old stock front. This would make the setup look very weird and funny. With the tank ending smoothly and a wide seat starting abruptly. Make a small cut on the front, and fold the sides inwards.

I'm going to use the old foam, and a new cover. This seat will be a twin seater. Should I make it a straight flat seat?! Or should I make it an inch lower for the rider and the normal height for the pillion?!
