Does this frame damage need to be repaired? (cb360)

I'm going for a minimal style build so the first thing I did when I stripped the bike down to the frame was cut / bash off any unneeded bits. Everything looked fine until I went to grind down some left over weld and found this:

The frame is upside down in the image and the damaged area is where the lower half of the seat lock assembly was welded to the frame. I guess I shouldn't have used a hammer ;)

So it's kind of a dilemma for me because I don't have the tools, experience, etc. to replace that part of the frame. But on the other hand it's just a small hole/tear (maybe 1.25 inches) and it's close to other structural parts of the frame.

I won't be racing this bike... is it unsafe to NOT repair this?

Where are you located? There may be a member close buy that might want to help. If you are in the Minneapolis area, I would gladly patch that up for you.

I'm in Maine (Portland area). Thanks for the very kind offer, though.

Maybe I could patch it myself. I do have a flux wire feed welder that I just got but I assumed it would be fairly in depth. How would you go about patching that?

Personally? I would cut a piece of pipe that has a close ID to the OD of what you are patching and weld around the seam. The flux core welder will do the trick. Make sure you get it nice and clean and paintless where you will be welding.

I would say that needs repaired, that spot is pretty integral that part of the strength of "triangle". The shock mount right behind it will BEAT it to death eventually and either break or fold the frame. That also puts flex into a spot that shouldn't move at all, not that these frames are very rigid to begin with.

Find someone to weld it up before you go out riding it for sure. And since they are there you might have them weld up the seams on the stamped parts of the frame as well.

WOW, I'm located in Auburn Maine, 30 miles away. I could fix it for you no problems............

That damage must be repaired, and it must be done by someone who know how to weld. Owning a welder does not qualify you to do the repair.

"Bashing" components off of the frame tells me that maybe you shouldn't be building a bike. Sorry to be blunt, but that is an excessively crude method for removing unwanted bits that are welded to the frame.

Take it to a qualified welder. I doubt it would cost you more than $25. Consider that to be your "stupid tax." :)

Hahaha...Is it me or is everyone grumpy on here lately.

I remember a time when the shit talking was hardly there. It was left at that other forum that I came from.

I am a qualified welder of 15 years. My normal rate is $95.00 an hour with a one hour minimum. I am offering my services for free to a fellow DTT member. PM me if you'd like to drop it off at my place in Auburn, Maine.................I could do it while you wait.

Well then, I would like a featherbed frame designed specifically for a Suzuki T500 motor.

Sounds wicked perfect.

Do you guys use that word?

Of course we do ;)

GLEN, Awesome! I'll be PMing you soon! There's a hairline crack on one of the rear engine mount flanges too.... maybe we could take care of that as well. Thanks!

@AlphaDog
I didn't just bash at these components with a hammer to remove them. I used a hacksaw (dedication) and then a hammer to bend of back and forth and free it. I now have a grinder but I didn't at the time so I got by with what I had. The fact that I'm asking about the damage should give you some reassurance that I'm not completely retarded...
