I would be so stoked to see this come together. There is a lot of talent here, and plenty of stories to be told. Plenty of these stories are told around campfires and star filled nights at our GTG's . Heck, they could be turned into songs.

Gonna throw my penny in the pot here...

I'm a freelance writer/journalist by trade actually and I'd love to contribute if possible. I've got a few "Cafe" style stories if you wanna see some writing samples. I'll actually be posting a story (non-bike related) in the next day or so if you want to check it out.

I'm actually out of school for the summer so maybe I could ride around and meet up with some of the guys and write their stories for them. That's sorta my job description anyways and I'd love to do it. Let me know if that's something you'd be interested in and we can talk more. Wouldn't mind helping out with the editing/publishing either. Would really just love to help any way I can.

Oh, and by the way Tim. Thanks for making DTT what it is. Love this place more and more each day. Seriously. I've been on a lot of forums and this is without a doubt my favorite. You're the man.

I've been reading a lot of stories from builders and riders, new and old. There are so many great threads like Beachcombers tales of the day or the police stories thread. I was just reading a story on Saturday about a guys morning ride that was incredibly written and really nailed what "the ton" was all about.

What I am getting at here is wanting to compile a book of stories from the Do The Ton Forum and make available to everyone. I work in industrial printing and design so I know a few things about how books are made. By a few things I mean I am passionate about books/design/printing and have spent years laying them out.

Something I am also passionate about is motorcycles. This coffee table book is something I have been thinking about since I joined the forum and I would like to see if the rest of the members are interested or if I am just being nerdy about paper and ink. The stories, especially from some of these guys who have been around for a while, are priceless and historical to the community. I would like to see them concentrated into a single volume that we could all have sitting out in the garage next to the shop manuals and oil cans.

Let me know what you guys think!

Great idea .......you may have seen that I am collaborating with a similar "Coffee Table" book with the artist John Hancox - and Swivel - I have to disagree, there are times when you can't work on your projects, and reading about the history [ all eras ] and roots of our hobby can be very enlightening - especially for younger enthusiasts who missed out on biking in the late 50's and 60's. Once the current crop of 65 + year olds pop their clogs their won't be any real life events to relay by those there - you'll [ the young ones ] will be reduced to heresay and myth..........like Record racing. No, don't get me started. Harrrumph, harrrumph, harrrumph.

So, I'd be happy to contribute should you wish to include some of my Tales.

Thanks for posting Fox....and thanks for helping me out with my build along the way!

I'd love to have you contribute. It means a lot for you to be so interested in it. After thinking it over I would like to limit the submissions to one per person and only to do the ton members. I want to "keep it local" within this community. There is a huge world of motorcycles out there and I want to take a sampling of this community, at this time. This place has been an amazing help to me and a great escape each day from work and life. Theres some sort of moth to the light thing going on with DTT every time I get online. I felt that it was only proper to keep the book limited to just the forum members. Kind of like logging into DTT only in paper form.

Sounds good to me, and you're welcome! It's a pleasure to follow along

Definitely agree with limiting submissions to 1/per person, I just thought that some of the guys that are less inclined with the english language might have wanted some help/ghostwriting with their stories. Not trying to steal anyones thunder, its just that this books is essentially what I do as my professions/passion and I would love the opportunity to write about motorcycle, DTT in particular. This place has an interesting heart to it and I'd love to see it shared.

To reiterate, I'm not trying steal anyones story or come off as overbearing, if I can help improve the quality of someones writing and thus the quality of the book over all, I'd be excited at the opportunity. Basically, if theres a need somewhere, I'll help in any way I can.

The eagerness to help is very much appreciated. As I wrap my arms around it I will know better in how I can be helped. Being in the printing/publishing industry I know there is a strong want to make the slickest possible piece as one can but this book I see being more "As is", more rough around the edges much like a lot of us here and the bikes we build! The point of it is to sample a multitude of stories, art, photos from members that want to be part of it and let them speak in their own words, even if those words are broken english or the best of Britain, I still want it to be "their" account on the matter. I will obviously format and spell check but leave the rest of it up to the author. I'd even love to include some scans of hand written letters if there are any out here.

Such a great idea. How about natural paper, great photography mixed up with nicely graded snaps, more a cultural statement, showing art, bikes, people, classic pinups, garages, rides, stories from the older guys etc. Kinda like FUEL magazine, but just more "book" like?

I'd gladly submit writing for use. Glad you liked the story of my morning ride, Robot.

Loved the story man, just loved it. Your story is what pushed me over the edge to go ahead and throw this idea out there. I had been thinking of it for a long time and that was enough to set it all in motion. I actually sent that post to a few people who are not members and they loved it. Everyone agreed on how you perfectly captured what this is all about.

Hey everyone. Thanks for the feedback and input. I am gonna press forward with this and very soon I will have a website set up where those people who would like to submit a story can do so. The website will be a home base for the project and will provide all the details regarding the book and how its going. I've got a message out to Tim right now and as soon as he blesses a couple things I will share the site with everyone.

A timely lesson on how not to portray anything "Cafe"....French wanking at it's best.....

At the top of the page it's got a button to report abuse, but then I thought about it for a while and I couldn't decide whether glorifing an old Commando bit of junk as a work of "art"was worse than a pictures of native rustic hair salons,....I still can't decide.....

I have warned you: http://www.themotart-journal.com/

Did you mean to post this? It does not pertain to the thread in anyway what so ever. Im confused.

"Pertainability rated 9.5"

Isn't portraying a cafe culture in a book what this thread is all about, silly me!.....

I visited said link and it looks like someone built a Norton cafe bike, then posted pictures. I don't care for the fender/tail light much but they seemed to do a good job on the build. Not sure how it pertains to the "culture". If you don't like someones bike then that is just a matter of opinion. I've gotten a couple comments from you on different threads and they never seem to make sense.

Quote:"never seem to make sense": To you it seems,.....ask some one with a college degree to explain it to you with pictures, like the website I suggested you peruse through.....

I have two college degrees and since I work in printing I could probably take care of the pictures as well. Just get over it, its a book thread about the culture here , I'm gonna make it and I'll send ya a copy.

Yeah robot co, don't pay him any attention. It just feeds him. Kind of like the less intelligent cousin to apple's siri. And I eagerly anticipate the dtt book. Hell, even swivel could have a mention in there - in the appropriate category, that is. I can say that I totally enjoyed reading Ace Times, a book about british cafe culture and the cafe itself. Its coffee table sized, and full of personal stories from the golden days. Maybe one day we will look back on these days and be glad we have a chronicle of this time in our lives, if for no other reason than for our children. Thanks for this undertaking man.

Mr. E, thanks a lot man. That was really well said and I appreciate you seeing this as something another generation could look into as a reference in this snippet of time. I'm very happy to have had the idea and promise I will create something we can all be proud of as cafe riders, builders, and DTT members.
