all this an no pictures?!

I nearly solved the problem- and since I was given a nifty pic posting tutorial, I will post pics of this project, which hopefully doesn't look like ass when it's done...

Aww come on bunnyman! You have to include pictures!

Try keeping all your work in one thread, that way it'll be a lot more organized.

Pics to come. Patience, my friend...

And not to be flip or smart-alleckey, but this is a separate project from the Duc; however, I may use this solution on the Duc. I am doing this for the person whom I had traded my Kawa to.

Re: Dual Projectors AND a Thruxton Fairing? It CAN Be Done!!!

Written tutorial:

Your mate buys your vintage KZ, and it came with the custom Thruxton fibreglass flyscreen. While you help him work on the said bike, out of the blue, he says: "How 'boot we put projectors on this bad boy? I will not sell you back your flyscreen and order one with a number plate moulded in".

One problem exists: You have a huge, gaping 8" opening for a headlight.

Your mate then says this: "I know you can make it work. I mean, you have built bicycle frames out of carbon fibre and most of them made it around 10,000 miles whilst not falling apart".

I contemplated reshaping a Yoshimura pipe using my mate's head; however, my inner Mac Guyver came out. I solved the problem.

Here goes!

1) Buy a 10"x12" Maier USA plastic number plate
2) Trace headlight hole from Thruxton flyscreen
3) Add 1/2" to said tracing
4) Locate and cut holes for projector beams
5) Rough up edges and glue plate to inside of fairing
6) Paint and mount.

If said plate keeps coming off, you can always get a fibreglass number plate from Airtech and repeat steps 2-6. But I think the pressure from the lamps will keep the plate on pretty well.

Pics to come soon!!!!

Re: Dual Projectors AND a Thruxton Fairing? It CAN Be Done!!!

Well, I ended up punching out the plastic number plate and will affix a new square plastic one with holes for the projectors. I know it will look a big ghetto, but then again, most race stuff ends up looking a bit ghetto (and barnyard, depending on what race discipline is involved)-engineered, anyhow. I will affix the number plate with zip-ties OVER the fairing. Most of the time, headlights are duct-taped over, anyways in a race situation. I will make it look cool.

Zip-ties and cool very rarely go together ;D

In general, no. ;)

However; I will figure out how to get the plate over the fairing and still make it look cool, zip ties or not.

Then there will be pics!!!

Okay- I finally have pics, so stop your kvetching!!!!

I don't have the fairing painted yet, but I have test-mounted the number plate that will cover the 8" hole. After some hand-wringing and a few botched attempts at finding the mounting holes (hence the stickers all over the plate), I will be able to get a nice, fibreglass number plate and use this plastic one as a template. I think an oval plate may work better, but the square was all I could find.

Mounting detail. I think we will put a bit of velcro onto the plate and the fairing to keep it securely mounted. I will also clean up the wiring and the mounting for the fairing. Some aluminium bits are serving as washers for the indicators, and that must be cleaned up, as well as the ghetto-booty-licious wiring job. This was all the Mac Guyvering I spoke of. I think this solution will work better, especially when replacing light bulbs. I stole the fasteners from a bellypan mount (I know there's a proper name for those), and this makes it easy for me to install and remove the plate. That is heat-proof tape to prevent the melting of said plastic number plate by very hot projector beams.

I wish I would have kept this bike, as she's starting to look cool!!! She still has a bit of work to go, and we're disassembling it this winter. I think we're going to shorten the tail a bit. And don't laugh at the foam seat- she's getting a proper upholstered seat later. And yes!!!! That is a Roc City Cafe carbon fibre fender!!!!

I agree, I also think nothing screams ghetto made than hand cut circles. You really need to start over and get yourself some hole saws. That will allow you to make nice perfect circles that are just big enough to fit the lens through. I am assuming that the fairing will cover up the mess of wiring, but I think everything needs to get sucked up about 2" closer.
