Dues ex Machina....feel like you've been sold?

For the record (To Kiosk guy....cell phone covers?) I make my living making custom parts for other people's bike so bite me cell phone boy. ;)

I don't know exactly, I fault no business for making money and doing biz. I am simply filled with disgust whenever I see their ads/products...whatever. I'm sure it's all on me, but it all feels so entirely false: Potemkin cyclist fronting a non-existent lifestyle for the clambering masses.

I'd love to fuck around in Bali and play with toy bikes, I'd love to get paid a shit-ton for only OK quality soft goods.

Mostly I think it's the Lifestyle/Culture/Kulture horseshit that bugs me. Disregard, go grease our pompadours and I'll go back in the shop.

Check out the article on PipeBurn.com about the girl who takes provocative photos of herself, dyes her hair red (to look 50's mod) and customizes old bikes. I personally like Deus but I understand why some people may not...however I can't stand the article about the girl starting her business with a shitty web site and a B&W photo of her laying down in the background.

I'm just happy I learned how to pronounce Deus properly :) Kind of that aha moment when you learn to say Nike and Porsche correctly :D

Hey, they make cool stuff and aren't being pretentious wankers about it.

I have no problem with that.

I still wouldn't buy one.

Lemmings don't actually follow each other off cliffs. Disney straight made that shit up.

Most useful post in the thread.

Why the need for all the drama? Do what you like. Ride what and how you like. If you don't like the bikes or the $50 tees don't buy 'em. Smile and wave when someone rides by on a Deus bike wearing one.

It's the Harley Davidson business model. Don't just sell the bike, sell the life style, the experience, the thrill, and a load of $50 black t-shirts. I work in marketing and honestly thats the angle most brands are trying to take. The all want to market their brands as more then a product or service. They want to market everything as "an experience". Fortunately I'm just an audio engineer so I really don't have to deal with much of that, but I have been to many meetings where plenty of vomit inducing ideas were pitched.

As far as Deus goes I have nothing against them for making it work. they obviously found a market and hey, more power to them if they can make some cash having a good time. I do like what Swagger (custom parts) and Dime City (parts/custom parts) are doing more though. I think they add more to the culture as a whole instead it's own "lifestyle" within the culture.

Maybe that's it, the "Manufactured Experience" that really bugs me. I hated it when Harley really went nuts with it and haven't stopped thus far. Maybe it's just me being grouchy. Dig what ya dig, it's all good no need to get offended boys.

If you ever drag your sorry ass to a get-together I'll give you a feel better manly man hug. I'm just that awesome.

He is, trust me. [EDIT] As in FIX is awesome.

So I guess this means you all hate me now :p

When I started Rust Revival a few months ago I looked at Deus, I&A, etc. They all kind of follow the model talked about here of building bikes/selling shirts and a lifestlye. I noticed or thought I knew what was up right away when I saw a bunch of neat bike builds with $50.00 shirts floating around all over the place. I'm glad to hear/read that these guys are actually passionate about building motos as well as making hipster bait. Its not their fault that a bunch of mustached kids who ride fixed gear bicycles can only wear shirts with bikes on them b/c their parents wont let them buy a real life motorcycle. Good on the companies for thriving and selling but good Lord....$40-$50 shirts?

I don't have a lot to say except i'm with Swagger. I do commend them on buiding a sucsessful 'brand' but i'll NEVER even pick up anything with their branding on it. I dunno, i think i feel they've given the "cafe racer" thing a certain.........shall i say....fakeness. And for some reason that kinda pisses me off. I was looking forward to riding my bike (when finished) into town and just stopping at a cafe for a coffee when i wanted, then sit outside drinking said coffee, having a smoke and watchin' the world go by. Now i feel as the "world" goes by they'll be thinking. oh look, there's one of THOSE bikers.
I dunno, i just don't like "brands" i guess.

OT, but another one i hate is Von Dutch. Whoever turned the guys name into a brand needs shooting in the face with a ball of their own shit. I'm a custom painter come airbrush artist and now i can't walk down the street with a Von Dutch shirt on, i mean, FFS the brand followers don't even know who Von Dutch is/was.

If anyone is interested in how a "name" can earn you billions just do some research on Red Bull. It was actually the name of an advertising company whos owner liked a drink in Thailand and it went from there.

Sorry, my rant for the week LOL.

I actually saw some limp-wristed little tard wearing a Deus shirt today, Lee. In little ol Bozeman, MT. Made me think of this thread...and want to punch him. Ya, I hear you man.

I like Lossa Engineering. They build bikes that aren't gimmicky. Nice, tidy, functional bikes you can ride everyday.

i dont much care for deus' bikes and it took about two seconds on their site to see that they were selling shirts and a lifestyle. that cant be all bad for us,i read they were at barber, they must be putting some money back into the industry.those that want to pose can throw some money into the hobby/lifestyle and then sell their crap to the next guy who might actually stick with this whole moto obsession thingy we have going on.
