I was digging through my parts bin and came across a box that has two almost complete Dyna III electronic ignition set-ups minus the rotors. I think I bought them a few years back as they were advertised for a cb350 but think they were for a cb350/450 F. The problem I have is they do not fit under the points cover or where the points go at all.
I was wondering if any one has an information of modifying them to either fit the plate under the points cover or totally removing the pick ups and mounting them to an original points plate. I have done quite a bit of searching both on here as well as all over the internet but can't find anything other than people saying it is easily done.
Get a spare points backing plate or machine down the 4 cylinder one and move one pickup through 90 degrees. Get a rotor with one magnet and you are good to go - some assembly required.
I think I'm going to try it. The pick-ups are currently set up 180* from each other, just like the stock points are. The pick up plates are easily 2-5 times as big depending on which one I compair to the original, I have two setups with different size pick-up plates but the pick-ups are spaced the same and the whole for the rotor are the same size too. I took a pic earlier and I'll post it once I get home.
As long as they are exactly 90 degrees apart, it's fine. I say that because you will have to modify the new rotor ato make it fit, so you can cut a groove to allow it to work with whatever position the pickups are in.
Update: I finally got around to fitting this to my bike. I was tired of fighting with the points. So what I did was remove the pick ups from one of the DYNA plates and cut them down in order to fit them 90* apart. I then took an old points plate that I had lying around and modified it to make the pick ups fit correctly. I then needed to find a rotor that would work with the pick ups. So after searching for anything that would fit perfectly I found that a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe would fit over the mechanical advance perfectly. I then took a 1/2"X1/2" slip connector and cut a small section off and glued it to the piece of 1/2" pipe to make the rotor. I then drilled a small hole in the new rotor and fitted a small rear earth magnet into the rotor. She starts on the first kick and runs like a champ. The points cover will still fit on once I trim the pick up mounting screws too. When I made the rotor I glued a magnet in facing the wrong way so I glued another one in directly across from it facing the right way and it actually balanced the rotor too. I'm so glad I made the switch and am never looking back.
There's a guy about to release a Pamco ignition for the CB350 Twin. Should be any week now. I'm ready to buy as soon as he get's them. Frickin' steel too for $106.
He's got them for 500,550,750, and 450 already. Said he just got done with the testing and is awaiting units from his manufacturer. I'll post a review. I have much respect for yours being a bit of home re engineering though. Caused me to start looking for a used Dyna and doing it your way. Haven't found one cheap enough though. Glad to hear your pea shooter is a rocket now.
$106 is an unbelievable price. I think I have like $50 or so in mine. And I could probably do another one for about $50-60 in parts. But I only have one bike so for now one is the only one I need.
It looks similar to my unit. But I'd have to look at the instructions to tell you for sure. If you pm me we might be able to cut a deal. But I was having problems with the original control box, now the extra one, so I switched it out. I also have an idea for a control box but will have to look into things a little first.
