Dyna S Ignition for CB450

Zonda

CB450 Nut
Gents I did a how to, on fitting a Dyna S ignition from the GL1000 Honda to the Honda CB450. This was for the NSM 450 site when it was up and running, it's based on another members write-up but with added detail and photos. It's a pdf and 628Kb which is over the 512Kb limit for our forum. If you would like a copy just email me and I'll send it.
rod.s@uqconnect.net ;D

Or the site admin could upload it :D :D :D :D

I tried the link you emailed me and it wouldn't do anything... Just opened a blank page.

If anyone wants this attached, just zip it up and attach it to your post like you would a picture. I'd do it but I don't have the file.

is this going to be any help when applied to a cb350?

or any other bikes for that matter?

thanks for the effort zonda. :)

Very interesting. Doesn't look too difficult to install. But I am a little concerned about the lost spark during the exhaust stroke. If there is unburnt fuel and it detonates, wouldn't it cause some odd noises and alter the exhaust note? Not so worried about piston or valve damage, since that's what the motor is designed to do. I can see this working on the CB350 as long as the unit fits into the points housing.

anyway we can get that over to the $50 mod thread! i know it cost more but it is a great write up and should be put somewhere to remember where it is!

The wasted spark is used on all (out on a limb) modern engines as it burns any fuel left after the combustion cycle which reduces unwanted emissions. ;)
It has no detrimental effect on the engine as there should be almost no fuel left after the combustion cycle, if your engine is running rich and you can smell fuel coming from the exhaust, then you should book the scoot in for some tuning. :D
The spark is fired as the exhaust valve is open and you will notice no difference in the engine running, apart from running smother, easer to start, no need to adjust points etc etc. :)I have run this mod on my 450 work bike and have done 13000Km with no problems what so ever, at the 10000k mark i ran a timing light over the engine just to see how it was and it was still spot on! ;D ;D I brought mine for $120US (3 years ago) from Zpower and is the best mod i have done to the 450.

Zonda: Thanks for the email, worked great!

now i just need the money for the dyna

Sorry to bring back that post from the dead... but I have a question. When I try to install the point cover over the dyna-s ignition it dosen't fit with the cabling like you show in the post... can you help me out? Did you add more gasket to it?

If there is excess fuel that causes a secondary explosion (rare) then the engine would be flooded to the point of not running, so you would need to tune the carbs etc. All modern engines run a wasted spark to do exactly that, burn off any excessive fuel to reduce the emission.

Can you give me a hand on this?

How did you setup yours?

Yep sorry for not replying sooner, didn't get a notification  Anyway pictures are better than words!
Take one housing and slice off the outer 7mm. I used a band saw, but a mill would work or a hack saw with lots of patience ;D

Some people have just ground down the sensors ??? which works, but seems a bit dodgy :-\

Cool thanks!!
Do you have a housing left ? Would you be ready to cut a slice for me and to ship it to canada? Ready to pay for it don't worry.

Let me know.

Most 70's and eighties Jap fours had two coils and therefore had a wasted spark.

That extra spark does not burn anything on the "other" stroke. Combustion only occurs where there is the right mixture and it's compressed. On the wasted stroke, that is not the case.

There is no effect on emissions or performance or anything else of a wasted spark.

Modern bikes use coil on plug and are fired by the ECU only when needed.

GL1000 Dyna also fits straight into a CB160/175/200 points housing but on those bike you need only 1 pickup, so you get a spare.
