Emgo Shorty Fitting

Been Around the Block
Hey all:

finally have an opportunity to get working on the bike again with this warmer weather. Got some slip on emgo shorty mufflers from DCC (the cheaper ones/not reverse cone or slash cut) for my cb350. I'm looking for some tips on fitting them. I have seen some people weld them up, which I'm not inclined to do. I've seen others with smaller bikes use muffler tape or some other kind of sealant. Mine are just a little bigger than the header pipes. For reference, if I wrapped one layer of muffler bandage around the header, the emgo will no longer slip over it without tearing that material. So, I'm looking for a recommendation on a clamp for these and any sealant options you all may offer. I want to get them on solid so that I have the littlest chance of running into a leaking problem or a falling off problem. I'll probably just try to grab a couple of clamps from Dime City to see if they will do the trick, but wanted to check to see if anyone had a similar experience with these. Lemme know. Thanks guys.

You'll probably need a clamp.
But you can try cutting a beer can and making a strip. Wrap that around your header and see if you get a snug fit

Thanks Sonic. I had the thought about some thin sheet metal. Do you have a set of these mufflers? If so, do you recommend a certain clamp?

Hey Isaac! How ya been bud?

You need to measure the outside diameter of the muffler, where it slips over the pipe. Its slotted so that it will clamp down on the pipe.

I think these will work, but you really need that measurement.

Been good Mike. Even better after today as my parents came across state to visit me and brought a pint of HDS chili. Missing the old BC. Thanks for your response on this. Not sure what you mean by slotted. I was thinking I might have to cut to make flanges or something. Here's what I'm looking at. Should the clamp be based on the size of the header or the outside measure as you say? I think the header is 1 1/2, but need to measure tomorrow.

I can just wedge real well with a beer can and get a clamp that can hopefully tighten it up snug. I was thinking maybe a 1 1/2'' clamp, but maybe I'm not properly understanding how the clamps are sized.

Exhaust clamps usually have some leeway in the size. So a 1.5" exhaust clamp will fit over a 1.375" to 1.625" pipe. If that's any help.........

And the slots Mike referred to run in the direction of the pipe. Usually there's only 4 slots every 90° and are only about 1.5" in from the end.

Good to hear all is well man.

Thanks Rich. Hope all is well with you also. I'm still unsure of these slots. Would they be behind the baffle in the pics above? Guess I'm just not sure how they work. I'll probably grab a 1.5" clamp and use a beer can or muffler bandage to mitigate any leaks.

The slots they are talking about is so the muffler end can "squeeze" down onto the header. so for instance, if were to start cutting the muffler in half (longways that is) but you stopped about a .5" before you got to the part on the muffler that starts to get bigger. This would allow you to be able to squeeze down those two cut halves easier than trying to squeeze a perfectly round pipe.

Your basically just cutting the pipe end in two (or three depending on how many cuts/slots you want to make) so it can squeeze down like a clam.

Hope that explains if for you and you understood that.. Good luck.

Yeah that's what I thought. My question was really that (as the pics above show) I don't see any slots. I know I can cut to make slots/flanges so it all squeezes down, but it sounded like Mike and Rich thought the slots were already present on the pipe and I don't see any. So is the theory to go ahead and cut slits every 90 degrees or so?

I ran two of those a couple years back. I cut slots to clamp down like Rich and Mike are saying. It worked out just fine.

Sorry Isaac - the reason your muffler doesn't have those slots is because it's made to be mounted at either end (to accommodate different pipe diameters). It is perfectly fine to cut some small slots though - just don't go in too far.

Grab a hacksaw/jigsaw/grinder/dremel etc... Start at the end of the side you want to clamp down. Cut about 1.5" into the flange towards the middle of the muffler, rotate 90* and do the same, rotate 90*, etc etc. In the end you should have 4 slots that go from the end of the pipe toward the actual muffler part.

Another way is to "set screw" the muffler down to the header. Slide the muffler onto the header pipe. Drill a "tap drill size" hole through the muffler AND the header in the same place. Grab a tap and run it through the 2 pipes. Get a couple allen head screws that size, and tighten the piss out of them, this way avoids an ugly clamp if you're REALLY worried about it.

Yea, some mufflers come with them already.. Your's...not so much. Yea go ahead and cut them. If your going to make them just hacksaw blade thin, I would go ahead and do four cuts. But if you are cutting slots that are 1/8 or so with the saw two might work just fine. I would go till about 3/4" from the flanged out part of the muffler.. Keep in mind that the exhaust clamp only covers so much so unless your wrapping or dont really care about seeing the slots stick out on both sides of the clamp I would use your own discretion on how long to make the slots. That said you need to cut them long enough to work haha.. Catch 22 man. Find your happy balance...or happy place, whatever comes first.. haha!

I'm going to do the slits and tighten 'er down to the header pipe. It looks like the header pipe is about a 1.5" and the muffler about 1 5/8". Considering the disparity in clamping sizes on these clamps, do you all think I will need a 1.5" clamp or a 1.75" clamp? Both available through DCC, just need to decide which I need. Worried that the 1.5 might not be big enough, but that the 1.75 won't clamp down enough. :-\ Thoughts?

Sorry Isaac, can you post a link to the clamps in question? I'm on my phone so it's tough to browse....

Here's the 1.5" http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-round-chrome-clamp-80-62340.html

and the 1.75" http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-round-chrome-clamp-s004.html.

Those are the cheapo ones.

There are also these ones which appear to have a 1.56" to 1.70" clamping diameter, but again that is sort of ambiguous. http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-round-chrome-clamp-212-2757.html

I think any of them would work just fine. The 1.5" clamp could be spread, but the bolt may have to be longer to reach. Personally, I would go with the 1.75" and shim it if needed.
