Engine question

Hello everybody, I'm new to the forums and while I have a pretty much stock 1980 SR250 I would like some more power. So I got to looking on craigslist and found a 400 Special. It's not running right now, but shouldn't take much, not froze or anything, and I'm only getting it for $170, can't beat it. Anyway my question is, how hard would it be to swap the 400 into the 250 frame? Is it even possible? Just looking for some help before I get it and start tearing it apart. Thanks for the help, I'll give a pic of my bike!

it's possible that it might fit the stock engine Bolt locations and bolt right in (usually not the case tho) My guess is your looking at a XS400 twin that will more than likely be a bit wider and taller than the SR motor so would require modification to your frame....An easier route might be to just get a title for the XS and ride that once it's running...

I had this 360 about a month ago look at the Frame rails up front it has 2 where the SR has 1 not the best pic to show them

And Welcome to ddt!

Thanks for the input! Either way ill get the 400 and see what it looks like from there. But if anyone has any experience with something like this, any information on what to expect would be appreciated! Pic this time is a new tire after a blowout at 65 mph, scary stuff!

You might want to look thru this fantastic build http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=32151.msg345163#msg345163
In this build he puts a xs 400 engine in a xt 350.
And if you dont find any knowledge there for your engine swap its absolutely worth reading !

Very nice read! Informative and shows a lotta the possible steps, thanks for the heads up and the link. I'll keep it all posted when I get it, ill post pics of that too. For now, a pic of my 250s last problem..lol

Alright guys, I went and got it. Little more rust than I thought.. oh well though. Wherever I read that it's a direct swap, is wrong. Lies lies lies. Those bastards. Now I have a decision, to go through with the swap the like other guy to the 400, or just fix this one and lower it a lil (it's just a little too tall). Anyway, here's the pics! Enjoy and as always any opinions are not only welcome but appreciated!

Rust? Where? Compared to the rust bucket my GS650G project started off as, your 400 is not that bad! I set up a soda blast cabinet for a few bucks where I can do both soda and glass blasting to get rid of the old finish with soda and the rust with the glass. Get some Evapo-Rust and start soaking the hardware in little cups (I mark plastic beer cup which parts are which) and it works wonders.

Build up the 400 while you're riding the smaller one.. hey next thing you know ya got two bikes in the barn ;) "But honey, it followed me home.. " Luckily the wife doesn't come to the shop often so she doesn't know what's in here.. ;)

Did the blow out cause the bare strip on the tire or did the bare strip on the tire cause the blow out?! Regardless, that tire should have been changed out long ago. Glad that you survived that incident.. scary!

good get xs400 is a good bike.... I bet you'll pay attention to your tires after that blow out. Same thing happened to me years ago on my vespa lucky for me those things carry a spare tire

Blowouts are scary stuff! Old man rode to Cape Cod from Ohio back in early 70s... they had just finished I-80... cruising along at 65-70 and front tire blows. Managed to ride it out. This is also the man who successfully rode both front and rear wheel over a football on a BSA... Glad you're ok.

That XS will be a fun bike. Good score!

Oh man I can't imagine a front tire blowout..must have been somethin else! Thanks, I like the looks so far! Started working on it, can't find any of my 10 mil sockets so I wait a few days..
