Epoxy paint & etching primer questions

Useful Idiot

Been Around the Block
I'm getting ready to paint my CL450 frame and I've heard a lot of good things about epoxy paint's toughness, but I have a couple questions.

1. Do I need to use ANY primer for epoxy paint or can I shoot it straight onto the metal?
2. Do I need to use etching primer or will regular work? The frame is down to the bare metal in most places, but not everywhere.
3. Can I shoot clear over the epoxy?

The plan right now is to just hit it with some think primer, then a gloss black epoxy paint (if it comes in gloss, etc)

Thanks!
Mike

oh boy.... let me tell you. if you can get this paint down it looks good. I had trouble with it. I first tried the silver and it was horrible. I went to the black and it does have a nice glossy finish. here is my advice on the paint. I had to do my fork tubes 3 times and I finally got it down right. I went on bare metal. make sure the part is super clean. I used a wax, grease solvent. also I what I found that worked best for me is to first do a light tack coat, wait about 5 mins, then hit it with 2 medium coats. I found that if you go to heavy the paint won't cure right and in some spots it will wrinkle. also all your spraying needs to be done in 30mins or less. after the part is sprayed wait about 36hrs to handle it. even after 36hrs the paint will still be soft. it takes about 5 good days for this stuff to get hard..

here is how I cured my frame. I sprayed it, then 24hrs later I put it in the back of my car. now i'm in south florida and if my car sits in the sun all day the inside temp will hit around 140 degrees.

I hope this helped you in some way
