A few months ago my Yamaha XS400 got caught in the rain while hot and the little crack on my muffler turned into a huge crack and now it keeps getting bigger and now its rattling on the frame and driving me nuts. So i'm thinking about just cutting off both my mufflers since i was planning on doing that eventually or getting straight pipes bent. If i don't change my air filters will i still need to re jet or will i be fine until i change something on the intake side.
I think at the first sign of a crack it would be best to start shopping around for new pipes . Cutting them would be pointless . There's a good chance they'd crack again since the steel is crap now.
It's just the muffler that's cracked around the beginning and the muffler is welded to the headers so i just going to cut right above the weld since the headers are in great shape.
let me know how it works out. I'm also thinking about putting some emgo shorty mufflers on anyone know what those are like? i'm looking for loud i cant find much information about them like if they have baffles or what.
Well, I chopped and the sucker started bogging badly at 5k-worse than with the mufflers. So I thought-too lean-out with the adjustment screws. Then it was worse. So I set back to lean-muuuuch better. Still playing with it though...

I planned on doing the exact thing but i don't think the shortie on pipe 3 would fit on the pipe due to the frame . But I think you can move the header pipe since they're clamped , not bolt-on . Let me know if it works .

Right now I am running MAC 4 into 2 Turnouts . I've been playing the idea around in my head to run 4 Emgo Shorties but if it doesn't work I'll be buying the MAC Drag pipes . Loud pipes save lives . Ya dig ?

i agree although a loud bike may get annoying i want everyone to hear me coming. i like how short simple and cheap the shorties are but i dont know how loud they will be or easy to tune. I'm also a little concerned with clearence under the foot pegs but i think they look wider then they are. have you ever seen them or heard them on a bike?

I've heard them on a New Bonneville and they are outright annoying . And that's only 2 . Them on a CB might be twice as annoying . And that is wonderful. I'm gonna grab my buddie's shorties ( only 2 . Same friend wih the NB ) to see if they'll have any clearance issues . As for tuning it shouldn't be too much of a problem .
good to know if you could take some pictures of them that would be greatly appreciated. i would like to see how big they actually are they look like they cant be more than 3 inches in diameter but it so hard to tell in the pictures i've seen of them.
i have two of those emgo side slash cut shorties on my 360, with pod filters... just needed the ever so slight jet tweak.. but they are LOUD and throaty!
