Exhaust questions...

DT250 project in the works!
So, I got a 1975 Yamaha DT250 and i want to put a down pipe instead of a dirt bike pipe on it. any suggestions?

Hello again.....I've just posted on your other thread !
There are a number of ways you could go about it. You could try and find a header from another model that will do the job. It might mean spending some time at the breaker, but something may work....
You could cut the end off your exhaust, and join onto that.......
Or you could make one. Or at least get someone to make one for you. We have 48mm stainless tube Mandrell bent to make Suzuki Gt750 and 500 headers. We designed our own simple clamps to hold them on, and it all works very nicely. Problem is, one Mandrell bend will be dear. Might be worth getting a few done if you can afford to, and selling the others to finance yours?

I don't know of anything off the top of my head, but it will need to be a big stroker for sure, I would think, as 4 strokes probably wont have a big enough diameter pipe. Not all 2 strokes use seperate headers either.
We have a DT250 in our collection, it's a bit newer than yours, early 80's, but I'll have a look at it and see if anything springs to mind.

I think it could be good news for you Von......I really don't know if your 75 bike is the same as our early 80's bike, but ours has an exhaust "stub" bolted to the barrell, and the pipe is then held onto that by springs. The distance from the exhaust port to the bottom of the engine is quite small, so it may be difficult to find a header from another machine to do the job as the bend will be tightish, and also the pipe diameter is pretty big....I didnt measure it but it looks to be 50mm or so. If your bike has the same stub arrangement, then all that's needed is some stainless tube with an ID the same as the OD of the stub. Weld on a couple of loops for the springs and you've made a start.
Check out ebay, as certainly over here, we have many angles on sale regularly, and it can't be too hard to join a couple up to create a header.

thanks a bunch titan, and yeah, they are the same pipe. so a 50mm u say? sounds like i hear a weekend project coming up :)

50mm was just a guess Von. I didn't measure it. Pop the exhaust off and put a vernier on the stub. Then have a scour through ebay for some bends with a matching ID....

I just searched, "stainless steel bends", and there are loads to chose from..
They can be welded, smoothed down and polished, to form whatever shape you require....
