So i was just wondering, they make some pretty real looking fake security cameras, and they are pretty cheap, but do they really work as a security measure? just wondering as i see them in ads all the time.

When i was in college my buddy put one in his bathroom behind the door. If you were a dude, you didn't notice it cause your back was to it, but every girl that sat down freaked out. So, I'd say his worked pretty well. a blinking LED and a 9 volt made for some pretty funny parties.

getting real ones is about the same $ as the fake ones... if you run them into a 48 hour loop, (that is how my house and shop run) you can then check them if you need to... but yes it does work... we have on vid kids coming up to my house with the garage door open go to grab sockets on the bike table then point at the camera, and run... we made bright yellow SMILE YOUR ON CAMERA signs for all the cameras as well... my buddy installed them all in about 20 min... i think it all came from harbor freight. also works out nice when you want to watch the dog in the back yard and not have him know your watching... hahaha some funny shit dogs do when they think no one is watching!

we had someone changing the elevator white noise music at work.. took a webcam stuck it on the wall pointing that the sat radio device and ran the cord behind a framed picture... hasnt been changed since.

My uncle in orlando florida has one on his porch. It got spray painted within 24 he's and his porch furniture was stolen. So he replaced it and stuff was stolen again soon after (gnome, bicycle, other random crap.) Thieves there either don't care, or know better. Or maybe they are just too gangsta to care lol.

Need a motion sensor hooked up to a speaker, when someone comes close, have the speaker play, "I'm watching you" in a real eerie psychotic voice. Might scare a few away. If you had multiple sayings, would seem more natural.

or one of those STEP AWAY FROM THE CAR AND NO ONE WILL GET HURT type voices

it's like the saying goes...any deterrent will only stop an honest person. for the cost of real cctv at least you can capture ID of the little gob shite, which will afford you the opportunity to hunt the bastard down. ;)

I fully believe in the "Locks only keep honest people HONEST" statement and I also think that if you ACT like you have shit to steal, someone will take it. Locks, signs, and Cameras included. I can bust a lock or knock open a door and I have no special tools just a crowbar and a pick up truck and chain.

That comes from someone that has to maintain about 15 cameras for our sites and head sheds for work. NO ONE used to screw with them till the cameras showed up. We never had anything stolen or messed with till the bosses decided to put them up. Course they are cheap and buy the NON bullet proof ones.

It's all a matter of who you are trying to deter. If it's kids or people that are unsure of themselves, than the props should work great great. If it is addicts or "serious" hoods than real or fake a camera wont have much of an impact, aside from what Frogman said, drawing unwanted attention.

I find it pretty funny that half the security cameras in walmart, target, etc., are fake. One way to determine which are fake/real is when you look up you will see wires briefly and they will feed through a shaft. The fake ones I notice are just mounted with nothing coming out of them.

that must be just out by you... when i was 13 i got caught on camera in walmart for stealing gummy worms... my buddy works in the corprate office for Target and he tells me funny stories all the time about the stuff they catch on cameras in target... why would a mulit billion dollar busn go cheap on cameras that has the potential to shave them mililons of dollars in theft... the ones out here are real, in missouri, real... and to my knowledge all target camera are real...

Fake cameras keep stupid people from committing stupid petty theft.

If someone wants to SERIOUSLY steal your shit, they'll do.

Last year a local grocery store was robbed in my hometown, and they had full security measures.

The crooks disconnected the power, cut a hole through an outside wall into the security room, disconnected the security system, and then removed the entire safe from the building.

I used to install alarm systems and the best part of the system was the sign we put in the yard. I have thought about installing cameras in my house to help secure it while I'm away. it would at least give me an idea of what happened if something happened.

On the west coast there are a bunch of stores, including Walmart, that put up fake cameras interspersed with real ones, probably to confuse would-be thieves and because security guards can only watch so many feeds at a time. Walmart and Target are really good at catching kids pocketing gummy worms or teenagers tucking clothing, but not always so good at catching the guy who's walking out with 4 Sonicare toothbrushes.
I assume they have formulas that look at the benefits of security to value of property lost and anything past their line they add to their prices and pass the costs on to consumers.

Re: fake surveillance cameras....do they really work?

at my dealership we have 4 fake, and 4 real cameras.

Since they have been installed we have had:

8 Catalytic converters stolen
2 drivelines
6 mirrors
4 radios
1 starter
1 gas powered air compressor (yeah huge wtf on that one)
1 truck

This is in a 2 year span, the property is plastered with camera signs. We even have motion lights that track objects. The cameras, and lights have not lead to 1 conviction. So yeah they work great, we get to watch our stuff being stolen.

Now a days real cameras are not that expensive, plus now there is wifi cameras, I was talking to a computer tech and he always recommends to have monitor that people can see themselves on camera to prevent theft.

Some dirtbag tried to jack my trailer out of my quiet suburban back yard last summer. I bought a more substantial looking hitch lock and cable locked the trailer to the shed. I bought a No Trespassing sign and wrote in big black capital letters "YOU WILL BE SHOT". My wife was NOT happy when she saw it. The sign remains, however. I toyed with the idea of installing a cc camera somewhere, but thought they could easily be spray painted or whacked with a bat. The only other effective deterrent I can think of is a quality dog (read, no ghetto pets). My wife won't go for that either!
