FENDERS/ MUD GUARDS

Depends where you are in the world.
Mudguards are a good idea, stops you getting covered in crap and the front acts as a fork brace (may not be much but it IS a noticeable difference without it)
Majority of bikes with the rear guard removed or hacked off look like crap, I prefer to go with 1960's~70's GP build regs, 30degree rear of vertical line through axle, it's easier to make things 'flow' (and so look right)
Most countries and ALL of the USA requires tail light to remain lit when engine is stopped (for everyone running without a battery)
In Britain you can get 'Daytime only' MOT and can use a rear reflector only, any lights mean all lights have to work but, 'all moving parts must be adequately covered' more a safety thing than keeping stuff clean
 
Good info man, I'm based in AUS and out here I swear every time I think I'm sorted I have to go buy a new part or alter something. Oh well, hoping to finish up in the next few weeks.
 
You can probably find motorcycle inspection check list online, I know British MOT check list is available (the entire inspectors manual can be downloaded)
I't's much easier and generally cheaper to conform 100%, but, you have to know the law better than the cop who pulls you over (careful though, it REALLY pisses them off ;) )

That's actually real easy to read plus diagrams show you what you can do.
Some of the stuff seems a bit OTT, but, regulations giving minimum ground clearance and minimum wheel coverage for mudguards would only be introduced because of 'someone' causing a problem years previously (be careful who ou piss off today, they may piss on you tomorrow ;) )
It's a real pity majority of American 'builders' don't follow some sort of safety 'code'
 
Adequate wheel coverage is an essential in my view, otherwise you are limited to riding only when there is a guarantee of no rain.
Riding a fenderless bike in the wet is no picnic!
It is possible to incorporate protection from spray into a design but it takes more thought than just ripping the fenders off and throwing them away.
'Form follows function' might be considered somewhat of a cliche but is still a good basis for motorcycle design.

I've always subscribed to that as well, it was one of my father's favorite phrases
He always told me the Victorians got this 100% right " Form follows function, function follows form"
I think I was around 7 yrs old when I first remember him telling me
 
You can try and be 100% legal, this doesn't stop a mobile tax collector issuing you with a defect, they only have to suspect the bike is illegal.

Sure, you can really push the boundaries with modifications but you can still push without making it really obvious that the mods may not be 100% legal. At the end of the day if a cop wants to ping you, they will even if your bike appears to be 100% legal. Remember, cops don't need to know it's illegal, they just need to suspect it is and it's up to you to prove otherwise.

Earlier this year I was pulled over and the mobile tax collector who suspected my 1098 to be too loud according to EPA regulations, so a noise test notice was issued in the mail. After several nights of research and trying to get the bike tested, I found that there are no current applicable laws in Victoria for bikes built after 2008 that are modified.
After a lot of discussion with EPA engineers, they have now put my notice on hold until such time EPA has current regulations passed as laws. They

Moral of the story, is you can continually roll over on what people tell you is right or do your own research which my result in something very different. By the way, I don't believe VSB 14 is anything more than a bulletin, so it doesn't really mean a great deal.
 
Yep, seems motorcyclists are always guilty until proven innocent.
Being an MOT inspector in Britain at the time really helped when the Po-Po tried it on (even got a ticket thrown out which surprised me more than anyone else)
 
I built highly modified cars for years, it's no different. Anything outside what is supposedly the norm is frowned upon.

I guess it's true, you don't get old and stop riding motorcycles, you get old because you stop riding motorcycles ;)
