Re: Finished my set mold

Looks great, what's it made out of? Was it done by hand, or cnc'ed?

The flat bottom is blue insulation styrofoam. I cut it then used a disk sander for the final finish to keep the edge perpendicular to the bottm. The "hump" is green florist styrofoam. It was hand cut/sanded to shape. the rounded edge is 1/2" OD tubing. it hides the sharp edge where the fabric meets the seat pan. Its wraped in blue painters tape waiting for two coats of release agent (PVA). Here a couple of photos of another seat I made the same way.

Thanks for the compliment. I find that every minute i spend making sure the mold is perfect takes ten minutes off the time spent sanding and filling. Total time from the initial cut to finished product was 3 hours.

so here's how i mounted the tail light. you can glass in the housing but the vibration will most likely couse the epoxy to seperate from the smooth housing. here is the housing covered in PVA.

Final piece glassed into the tail. I just need to drill the holes for the wires and mounting bolts.

Really nice work Shortround, impressive. I really like the lip you made into the seat to hide the edge of the cushion, very neat!

holes drilled and light installed. now all thats left is to shave 1/8" of the exposed sides of the black housing. then pull out the heat gun so the lense will conform to the curvature of the seat. Cheers :)

super work!! Is that upholstery above DIY? I have made a seat similar with the piping for an upholstery recess and I really like the way yours came out!

I have done my own in the past, but that one was wrapped by a professional. I was running out of time to finish the bike for the cafe racer shoot out, and had to sub it out. I gave him the seatpan and the grips and told him to find something close; which is how it ended up with an ostrich cover. The secrete to a good seat is the foam and glue. Three words: kayak seat foam. Its cheap, closed cell, and sandable.

look great, where did you get the ostrich leather from if you don't mind me asking
