Been Around the Block
Haha I'll try my best. Is there a certain part you need to understand better or the whole set up?
But basically on the stem side, you have a bearing with a big inside diameter and one with a smaller. The big one is for the base of the stem. You have to remove the factory race (base part where the balls sit on) from the bottom of the stem (where it connects with the lower triple tree). I did this by pounding it one by one around the race with a piece of thin pipe (you can use any hard metal that can catch). Don't worry about ruining the thin washer thing, you won't be needing it anymore. There's probably other ways to remove it as well, and hopefully someone else can chime in. So once everything is removed from the stem (it needs to be a bare stem, connected to the lower tree), I inserted the dust seal (bigger black rubber seal), then the washer (there's two of them, one is thick and one is thinner, and you pick which one depending on whether it will clear the bottom neck tube on the frame or not. I picked the smaller one), then the bigger bearing, narrow end facing up (as you can see in the pic). You're going to pound this all the way down, but be careful and don't damage the bearing. I went pound front, pound back, pound side, pound side. Keep doing this until seated.
On to the neck tube on the frame:
As you saw, each bearing came with a race (the piece that slides over the roller part of the bearing). Those races go in the opening of the neck tube (see pic below). So this means you have to remove the factory races. I again used the same thin pipe, put it through the neck from the top, made sure it connected to the race from the inside of the tube, and started pounded around again. Do the same for the top, pounding from the bottom up. They also make steering race removing tools.
Install both top and bottom races (bigger one on the bottom, smaller on on top), slide the stem through the bottom, install the upper bearing (smaller one), and then I believe there's another dust seal, and then thread on the cap screw thingmajugy.
Sorry if it's still confusing. Ask any question you have over anything you're confused and I'll try to help.
