pay attention to the ignition system and the pick up wires they fatigue

look up "coil relay mod" and do it makes a big diff when your coils are getting full power

also check your fuse box over carefully they are also problematical

He hasn't added anyone since early November. It's an active site, so something must be wrong.

I plan to rewire the whole bike with proper gauge wires. Do you think this mod really necessary in this case?
Anyway it's not a big deal to do...

No. The airbox makes tuning easiest, but it's best to start with stock jetting and see what you have when you get it together. Yamaha didn't leave much on the table with this bike. Deviation from the stock airbox and exhaust will likely not gain any HP for you. You might even lose. I understand that sometimes aesthetics rule and that box is pretty big.

Marty, I have to be honest... It's totally for the aesthetics. ;D
To me I can't let this enormous box mount on the bike!

No. Take the kill switch apart and clean it. Be careful. Little balls and springs will try to escape. Do the same with the ignition switch. Clean all the electrical connectors while you have access, paying particular attention to the one behind the fuse box that goes to the alternator. That should keep any electrons from escaping rather than doing their job. Dirty contacts in the kill switch often has folks tearing into the carburetors. ::)

First, I will refer you to my post of over a month ago to the Member's Lounge "trouble accessing xs11" sticky thread stating that JP Honeywell(WEBMASTER/OWNER of XS11.com) was notified some 3 + months ago regarding the database
glitch/error that has essentially locked the site from being able to add any new members. He has still not replied to my emails to him regarding whether he has any plans to try to repair it or what???? I'm about fed up with him and how he's
not managing the site, and that it'll probably DIE if he doesn't fix it because NEW people need to be able to register, post, request specific help topics, barter for parts/bikes, etc.!! :(
He went on to explain how he has been away dealing with an ongoing family crisis.

It will get fixed. Don't give up hope.

I bought another one some time ago for parts. I started parting it out then saw something that changed my mind.

This is a European XS1100 Sport, but I could do something similar with a Special.

The XS11 is a good bike. I've had mine for 12 years. Once sorted, they're very reliable.

It looks well loved, up close and personal. I use WD40, brake cleaner, and Super Clean. I use the Super Clean sparingly, because it will remove the paint and etch the aluminum given time. The covers, I do them with metal polish from time to time. This bike gets a lot of use.
 
Patience French Dude, they all clean up well with the right amount of attention. The XS11 is a hard bike to café, especially getting the rear frame high enough to clear a new seat. I've got an '81 as well, and as difficult as they are to modify, truly worth every moment. Mine's a standard, but heres an idea of what can be changed.

I think the stock shocks are about 12" eye to eye. Yours look to me like they might be short. They are not the OEM shocks. A believe you can go 13" with no trouble. Garagamus can probably advise you better on that.
 
Yes, everything is hand built, including the fibreglass seat. All of the electronics as well as an AGM battery are all tucked under the seat. If you get onto XS11.com, the first thing you should do (besides introducing yourself), is to request one of the new fuse blocks to update away from the glass fuses, (one of the members brings them in and sells them cheap). My shocks are standard, and I believe 12". Another great thing with that site is that most of the stuff you'll be taking off your bike will be bought by other members looking to bring theirs back to original stock.
