First time 400f

Hey all,

This is my first forum... Ever. I've never owned a bike until about three weeks ago I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a '76 cb400f that was owned by a close friend/mechanic. The time he spent tuning the carbs/maintenance made this bike run impeccably. I go to school two hours away from home and don't have much hands on time with my bike so I figured I'd try to learn everything I can on here. As far as mechanics, I'm convinced that this bike is where I want it to be, so I'm moving on to some minor changes to at least get the cafe racer look going. I was wondering what people think about handlebars/clip-ons? I'm a small guy, 5'7 150lbs. and like the aggressive riding stance. It's got a bum seat right now, but I've got to start somewhere but if there's a better place to start, please let me know.

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks,

Alex

Aha! 5'7".......

I'm guessing it has the stock bars and foot controls on it now? Clubmans can be found pretty cheap, but they can come with their own sorts of problems. Usually they can be too low with some foot controls, and interfere with the master cylinder. Try u-bolting the current bars and just slip them out of the way. Then place a broom stick in the clamps and see how they feel with you sitting on the bike.

Bars can usually be found pretty cheap if you look around, so don't be afraid to try a couple different types.

Welcome! And congratulations on "stumbling upon" a 400f. I also stumbled on my 400f and didn't realize what I had until after I bought it. It's a blast to ride and a six speed transmission??? How can you beat that? :)
