First welding job ever!

Been Around the Block
So I decided that my straight pipe is just too loud! Bought a couple of baffles from JCW and a couple of 5/8 washers. Its time to use the 90 am flux wire welder I got from HB 3 months ago! 3 hours and a few burned hairs. I think I got it! it look ugly at first, but after the grinding it out. its look OK.

It makes shitty welds, but it creates a solid weld..

For stuff like you did, its perfect!

Turn your wirespeed up, and make sure its on high setting, and you will get better looking welds then you have, Not pretty by any means, but more of a solid bead.

I've also read if you use good wire (Lincoln) in your size (Think its .030) you get better looking welds.. Flux cored lincoln wire is like $11 at home depot.

yes, I bought Lincoln wire from HD. This is my very first time welding. I am sure it will get better.....atleast I hope so! hahaha

practice practice practice! It takes years to be good at it, just promise me you wont be welding anything structrual with that please?

Yes, please nothing structural! Practice on scrap metal, you'll know when you see the puddles. Always remember when welding, "Cleanliness is next to godliness!"

pshhh! try welding 1/8 inch steel to 1/4 inch steel using an arc welder with 5/32 rod ;)

haha, just kidding man, great job!

Thanks all for the great advices. I spend some time on it today and I can see a big different. I'll just have to keep at it.! ;D

6010 or 7018?

If you can get a decent sized lump of steel flush behind it to act as a heat sink, you can actually get away with a lot.

Do it with a coat hanger and an oxy ace rig, then we'll talk.

I like your idea about making the exhaust quieter by welding on 5/8 washers. What size was your pipe that you welded the washers to? Did it help make the exhaust quieter? I currently have loud open pipes and think this will help. Let me know if you have any info.

7018... I can't get a nice bead with 6010 or 6011 for the life of me.

haven't had the chance to mess with oxy/ace setup yet... but even if i did, no idea why the hell I'd be welding coat hangers ;)

It takes practice I used to weld and fabricate for a living, changed professions and went a few years without welding a bead. First attempts after the hiatus were pretty rough. Just keep at it and you'll get better
