Flushing out old final drive (pumpkin)

Seaking

I started working on the GS650G (shaft drive) and drained the final gear oil.. holy croid batman, what a stench.. not a burnt oil kinda smell.. but something crawled up that drain hole and died. ergh.. Oil that came out (I thought I was going to have one of those IchiBan moments....) was black and stinky.

Though I put in some new final gear oil and spun the wheel around a lot and re-drained it, the oil came out rather new looking.. That's doesn't lead me to believe that this will work to get any old shyte out of there..

Is there a proper way to flush out the final gear drive without having to take it apart? The wheel spins fine, sounds normal.. just would like to clean it out proper..

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers

clean oil in it now is good once you get it running change it every 100 miles till it comes out as clean as when you put it in then resume regular schedule

Thanks M8.. will do that for sure.

Another suggested filling it with diesel fuel and spinning the wheel (not riding the bike) until the fuel drains out clear again, then flush it with final gear oil.. saying that diesel fuel is petroleum base and won't harm anything inside etc.. ?

Cheers

Would work fine. Just stinks fit to beat hell when the diesel cuts the built up crud in the pumpkin and it all comes out. Getting ready to do that to a 1947 Ford 8N tractor that someone left out in the rain with 90W where the tractor should have been filled with hydraulic oil... I have NEVER smelled anything as rank as rusty gear oil...

Seaking - if kerosene is a better option for you than diesel oil, it will do the same thing in this case. Sometimes kerosene is cheaper / more available than diesel fuel.

Thanks Scruffy and Big Rick, Kerosene I do have.. This should be interesting (smell wise) lol

Well, THAT did the job.. flushed it out a coupla times with kerosone.. a little dirty at first and then clean clean after a couple of flushes.. I let it air dry to get the rest of the kerosene out and topped it up with new final gear oil.. I have a note in my build log to change it again before the first ride to properly get rid of all the kerosene that might have been left behind and mixed with the oil at this time. w00t!

Now back to work on the drive shaft stuff..
