Flying J CB550 Atomic #13 DONE! Vote at BOTM

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Just got caught up on your build. Looking great, that seat looks pretty comfy.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Well, i had some plugs made up at the machine shop for the kicker hole. I had 2 covers so i had them make 2 plugs just in case i muffed one up.

Welded and milled. Attempt #1

It still has a few pin holes here and there but im sure it wont leak. Im not that great at welding aluminum yet.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Wire feed? Looks pretty decent to me, I'll be it holds!

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

and it leaks. Dumped some alcohol inside and there was a small pin hole. I have a feeling this is going to be a pain.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Got the cover oil tight now so i welded a piece into the case to block the hole where the kicker ran.

just an update for anybody following i have the wheels back on the bike. I have finished the mounting of the seat and im just trimming the seat pan down to size. Just need to pull the motor back out and take the bike to the upholstery guy to have the seat done. He is going to be doing my CB125 seat as well. I have alll my calipers polished up. I also have almost everything i need to rebuild my big bore motor.

Rocker arms back from being performance coated.

With both wheels 18" makes a huge improvement - great balance.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Are you running an endless cam chain or a master link? Only reason I ask is I'm at the same stage on my XS engine and noted you didn't have the cam chain on the crank. I'm running endless, and recall from my CB550 that the cam can be removed without breaking the chain so thought you might have installed it already.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Nope, you caught me. I forgot the cam chain and im going to put it on now. Thats why im going to do this slowly. So i can find my mistakes before i get to far. Very good eye tim.

Tim,
If you put new chain on XS crank, you can fit and time cam before fitting bearings on cam.
Takes a little levering to get second bearing on but not too bad

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Well, just an update. Started putting the motor together. I was doing clearance checks of the piston/cylinder deck height and found out that some of the pistons were not square when he modified them in the lathe so the edges are different heights. So pretty much crap i guess. So i need new pistons.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

I use a fixture when modifying pistons, need something to locate them all in the same place. Holding in chuck is a definite No-No

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Right. i do recall the guy saying he used a fixture. Something went wrong because i have height difference of .010 from one side of the piston to the other. Do you have a fixture for a cb750 piston? Interested in making some Cb550 big bores? I have the specs

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Or you know....a piston collet. I'd be after that shop for some money mate, no reason to walk away from it cold..

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

I don't have a fixture for CB750 piston, but, I do have several 0.75mm OS SOHC CB750 pistons here ;)
I also have the specs for modifying them (from 'Gentleman's Express' CB500)
I've been meaning to machine a few but 550 is still in Britain (4500 miles away)
I'm too busy playing with CB360's and XS650's though

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Well I can get a few sets of standards Board Pistons if you're ever interested

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

Just an update if you dont follow my motor build. The cases went together fine. Turns out the pistons are machined wrong as well as the cylinder head being off .005 from one side to the other. So I have to scrap the cylinders and the pistons. I still need a new cylinder but i bought a few things to make myself feel better about the whole mess. 1 step forward 2 steps back.

dynoman piston next to the junk one. Still waiting on my camshaft from web.

Re: CB550 alloy sprint

OK, so the cylinders are decked. Pistons measured in the range of level to .004 below. Im happy with that. The machinist (my new one) said that when he set the cylinders in the mill and cranked it down he found that the cylinders flex a little bit. This explains a lot of the issues I had with the previous set of cylinders. To keep it level he said he had to back off a hair and it was fine. So i may have the old cylinders for the 750 pistons decked again and run them on a different motor.

So now I need to assemble the top end to check for valve clearance issues. I also picked up a NOS cam chain slipper tensioner. Mine was cracked. They are not cheap.

Im also working on a CB175. This one may get finished first because its a much simpler bike to work on.
