Definitely go with a larger rear wheel if you can - I'd go all the way to 19". I'm running 18's front and rear and like the look of the same size wheels. 19's would look great on that bike.
I made a rear hoop for my bike. Im not sold on it because its not one round turn. I only had access to a 3" raidus and i really need a 4" radius. Im going to try and track down sombody with the right equipment in town.
Built the brackets for the faring and mounted the tac. Still need to finish the bracket for the headlight. The rear hoop looks to flat. I think it needs a bend up in it.
damn that cockpit is tidy! Unfortunate about the gas tank position, I'm curious what a 18/18 wheel combo would do for you, and maybe dropping the forks through the trees an inch or so.

I agree with this - an 18" wheel and tire and a 16" wheel and tire is about the same diameter. With an 18" aluminum wheel, you would be losing all the weight of the 16" tire.
The plan is to go with an 18 excel front and rear. The problem is they are expensive. Your right the diameter is not going to change much but that rear 16 is heavy!! I will change out the rear first and keep the front until it wears out, it has a brand new metzler tire on it . Now i just wait for some money to appear.
Check on Craigslist and Ebay regularly, I got a great set of aluminum shouldered rims off of a XS650 for $100, hubs, brakes, and all. There are still good deals out there if you look for them.
I look at the local craigslist every day. Problem is im not sure what fits the 550s. How many hole do the xs have? I know that the old gold wings fit but they are only 19 front and 17 rear so that doesnt help. I think ill just save my pennies and buy brand new with stainless spokes.
Bike is looking good...looking forward to seeing the finished bike!!
One comment.....if you spending that much time and money......man....you gotta get that tank to fit right. Just doesnt look right sitting that high in the front. Also....is that tunnel on the tank gonna fit over your coils?? Overall.....like the direction the bike is heading and that alloy fairing is NICE!!
I took the bike to a shop and said " Mkae me a seat to match this tank". I didnt care what it cost i just wanted it done NOW. a week and a half later and they had never even called to give me a final quote. So i went and got the bike. Now i took the rear hoop and made a paper template of the seat and shipped it back to the UK to the guy who made my tank. He is going to build me a seat to match. It will take a while but it least i know its going to be done right.
In the mean time i just fart around with the details like the brakes and where im going to put mu switches.
lookin good. I just picked up 3 cb550 awhile back, just tore down the first one to do a mild cafe build. I need to get some pics of it and start a build thread. Keep the inspiration coming.
Did a little work today. Welded in my brake tube and finished making the linkage. Its a pretty crazy looking setup but it works and thats what matters. Dont mind the bad weld job, im still learning.
